| Brushing Tips Please - My YT Hates It I have tried pin brushes, boar bristle brushes, steel combs, etc. I have been brushing my 9 year old yorkie ever day since she was about 3 months old. I am very careful and always hold her hair in my hand so that I don't pull to get a tangle out. My groomer and vet have both watched and tell me I am doing everything right. I brush her in the same place every day - on a folded beach towel on a worktable in our home. No one else except a groomer has ever brushed her and I trust my groomer completely - I take her every 6 weeks. She yelps like I am killing her. Please help !! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Does she have a cotton coat? I know it mats and tangles very easily. Sounds like you are doing everything right. I recently purchased the Chris Christensen wooden pin brush, because I liked the smaller head, and so many people recommended it. Joey hair is silky and its long only on his legs, but there are no sharp tips to hurt his skin and tangles come out in a jiffy. Here's a picture of it. https://www.a1petsupply.com/secure_h...odpinbrush.gif. Also, make sure you always use a good conditioner, and their are some sprays that make brushing go easier. I'm sorry your having such a rough time, I wonder if she just has overly sensitive skin? She has a beautiful coat! Remember, your first step is taking the tangles out, and then finish off with a comb, so a pin brush works best for this. Boar bristles just make the coat shinny; they don't really help with tangles.

| My Lucy hates it too and I can't get a bow to stay in to save my life. Still working at it. I think my fingers are too clumsy for those tiny bands.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I use the super stretchy ones to band the hair; they are much easier to work with. Then I use the band on the bow to wrap around that, but the hair is all in place so it's easier to put in.

| What size band do you use? I've tried the very teeny bands (thinking I wouldn't have to double them over) and they were still too big to hold the hair in place - but too small to twist and do another loop. Then I went next size up and tried to twist it on there twice - actually got the band in but the bow ended up being a little too big and heavy for the amount of hair I had in there. Have to keep trying.

| I start brushing Rosie by running my fingers through her hair a few times. This will help break up some of the tangles. Then I start using the brush. I do it a lot too. I think she has just gotten used to being brushed all the time. I do use a pin brush. It sounds like you are doing everything you should do. You might try using your fingers first but I really think you doing great. Has she always yelped when you brush her or did this just start? |

| I found some small scrunchies sort of like terry cloth at the grocery store. They stay in great and do absolutely no damage. |

| Thanks to all. She has always yelped. I will try running my fingers through although I do that alot when she sits in my lap. On the bands, I found small terrycloth scrunchies in lots of colors. I use them and they stay in great and don't damager her hair. I bought all they had and took lots of them and sewed her bows onto them so I don't use the bands any longer. At night, I braid her hair and put the scrunchie at the to give her top a rest. If I don't put anything in at night, it is a total mess in the morning after being in her eyes and mouth. |

| Believe it or not, even though this is my first YT and I've had her for 9 years and read all the books I can find, I don't know if she has a cottony coat or a silky one. She is not real silky, but her coat is really pretty and shiny. You can't tell from my Avatar her coat is pretty because that was taken at the lake after she was in the water about 3 times that day. Every time I take her to the vet he goes on and on about her coat. I will ask my groomer unless someone can tell me how I can tell. |

Just curious, have you ever watched your groomer when she brushes her? Does she yelp then? Maybe you can get an idea of why she is yelping with you if you can see how your groomer is brushing her and she doesn't yelp. Otherwise, I wonder if you have ever tried brushing her while she is in your lap? Mine LOVE being brushed while laying on my lap. Not always the best way to get it done, but if they love it, why not?
