| puppy or older dog shaffer is 6 years old, was never the dog in charge, he was always afraid of his own shadow, he always looked to my other dog to see if he was ok, its was cute but fife needed to be pts not long ago, I am thinking about a new dog, shaffer likes every dog we know and is friendly to new dogs but could take or leave them. I work at home so im home most of the time but when i go out and shaffer is left alone he freaks, the first time i left him to take fife to a drs appt my neighbor called said she thought he was hurt,, she could hear him from her house, he always freaked when left alone so afyter that i never did it, if fife needed to go to the drs or hospital i always got him a sitter. Shaffer never had a problem when he was home with fife, but alone he cries and cries. I have been paying a sitter the last few weeks when i go out, I have tried to leave him for little bits of time maybe 15 min but he cries and cries not barks but whines, he only does this when alone, or wakes up in the middle of the night and is alone in bed, I work at home and sometimes need to go to my computer to read a scan in the middle of the night and he didnt always wake up when i got up, but if he woke up andnobody around he would make the worst noise ever but as soon as he saw me or fife he was fine. Do most dogs do better with an older dog or a puppy? Thanks for any insight. |

| First, my condolences on the loss of Fife. Since you said Shaffer is good with all dogs I think it's really which you'd rather have. It sounds like he really hates being home alone, poor boy! If I was in your shoes, and wanted a doggy pal asap, I'd go to my shelter and see what need a good home as yours sounds perfect!!!! And you'd be saving a life!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry about Fife. I would think an older dog might be more settled and a better companion than a puppy for Shaffer. A puppy may be too stressful for him. There are many great Yorkie Rescues, some right on here that may have one that would make a great companion for Shaffer. Keep us posted.

| I tried the rescue route,,, didnt seem to go well,,, I passed the vet, personal and groomer ck,the phone interview, but not sure how the home visit went,, I live in a townhouse,3 floors,,, I have a yard but no fence,, I have 2 many steps and a loft, they think is danger for a dog,, mind u i had 2 yorkies that grew up here at 16 weeks neither was ever hurt at my home, Shaffer is a bit overweight Im working on it, I free feed and feed cans,, not good i guess, i dont crate another no no i guess and let my dogs sleep in my bed, they said they would call me that was over a week ago and no call yet, I guess i dont pass, sad I always thought I was a great pet owner. I take them to the dogtor 2x a year 4 ck ups and go to the vet if they are the least bit sick, they get groomed 1x a month and go for a bath once a week. Fife had lp I had repaired a hip that needed replaced, i took him to penn again, his trachea was a problem i took him all over to fix it, but nothing could be done for him, not to mention i love them both and they love me back. They are well behaved kind social and sweet, they acted better than some kids I know. I looked on petfnders and other rescues, but the rescue thing sorta has me down. Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | which rescues did you contact? maybe some of the rescue people here know of others in the area. i'm in north jersey and i'm always checking Craigslist and petfinder to see if there are any yorkies being given away or in kill shelters in the area. check craigslist. I think i did see a yorkie there today that was 4 years old and needed to be rehomed. edit: found this one in New york http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/pet/1821005645.html

| Condolences on the loss of Fife. I also think an older dog would be a better companion for Shaffer. I would be afraid Shaffer would teach a puppy this undesirable behavior. |

| I think getting a shelter or rescue dog is a very wonderful thing you can do for an animal in need! I think aimals who have been in a situation like not having a home and being "alone" they are so grateful for a loving family and make the best companions! I bet Shaffer would bond much better with someone around his age rather then a new puppy, which is going to be alot of extra work. Sorry about Fife |
