| Umm Really??? Ok, so Roxie is out in the living room playing with her toys, having a blast. All of a sudden I see her sneak away with one of her toys (one of those pink bobo toys) to her dog bed. I didn't think anything about it, but all of a sudden she starts humping the toy. First of all, shes fixed and there are no other dogs at our house, no other animals in the house period. Is this a dominance thing? Or what is going on? Anyone else have a dog that does this? I used to have a dog back in the day that did this, but she was very possessive and mean really, and Roxie is the total opposite? thanks for any ideas! | It is a dominance thing. Females or males can do it. Fixed or not fixed

| She brought the toy to her bed? Cooper is fixed. He does this too with one of his beds. The bed is about twice the size of him. It's the only thing in the house that he'll do this with. I usually tell him no and occupy him with something better to do.

| My girls do this on occasion as well. My cat used to do this to one particular dog toy, a stuffed dog. He would sneak it away and go to town. Cat is fixed by the way.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Here's a really good article on humping: The Down & Dirty on Humping: Sex, Status, and Beyond | Dog Star Daily I think she's probably just relaxing after a long day of guarding the house.

| My little female was doing it the day we brought her home...7 weeks old...she did it for a few weeks so I took away all her stuffed dolls except one... the one that she sleeps in her crate with. I thought it had stopped but tonight she did the same thing. She brought her doll to her bed and started humping it. I hate taking away her special toy but it beats having her do this. I do think it's a dominance thing as she puts it in her mouth and shakes it aggressively beforehand. She probably needs to feel she is not the last dog in the pack order.

My guess is that she's multi-tasking with this toy. She keeps her hunting skills sharp, and then gets some lovin' in. People's opinions vary on this, but I think that rather than trying to extinguish a behavior entirely, it's easier to teach the dog when it's appropriate. You can bark SOMETIMES, not whenever the mood strikes you. You can chew on your TOYS, but not my hands. You can hump your stuffed animal when you're on your own, but not another dog in the middle of the park.

| Quicksilver~that makes sense. But what do I do when she humps my daughter's dog when they come to visit? DD's dog tucks her tail under and crouches low to the floor to prevent it but mine is so determined. I don't like her to behave like that so any ideas?

Thor's Human Donating Member | I would clap my hands and say NO. Or you can squirt her with water. Or, you can train an alternate behavior. Like, if you can train a really good Sit/Stay with her, you can command her to Sit/Stay before she mounts. She can't hump and sit at the same time. I do have to say, it's hard to imagine the cute little dog in your avatar being so x-rated.
