| Male or Female I have a 2 1/2 year old Yorkie that gets along famously with a friend's little female Yorkie that is the same size(4 pounds). My Yorkie spent the first 1 1/2 years of her life in the breeder's detached garage. She is a nervous little thing, but is doing so much better. My veterinarian said I should get her a buddy that would be with her when I am not home. I take her everywhere that I can. I have been surfing the net reading pros and cons of males and females. I fear that a male may want to mark my house. My little female uses the pad wonderfully, but my parents had a male Yorkie and male Maltese that would visit and mark everything. I would appreciate all advice. |

| I have a male and he has never once marked in the house. If you neuter early enough and train properly, you can prevent marking. I have one of each and think it is the perfect combination. I find the males to be much more affectionate and loyal. But my two work perfect together!

| I have 1 male and 2 females and they both have wonderful attributes. My male is probably my most loving, but they are all loving in their own ways. I think if you get a male and he is neutered early, marking shouldn't be too much of an issue. I don't think you can go wrong with either personally and I think having more than 1 is wonderful. My babies absolutely adore each other and I don't think they would know what to do if they didnt have each other's company.

| My boy never tries to mark in the house (he was neutered around six months). I think neutering early will keep him from marking. Levi will occasionally mark a bush or tree outside (especially if he sees another male marking), but for the most part, he squats in the grass, no real desire to mark anything at all.

| Thank you for the response. What suggestions do you have for training? Is there a book or special tips that you would recommend. Lucy was so easy to train. |

There are lots of advice on here about training. Consistency is key I think no matter what you do. I think crate training is wonderful while potty training also.

I usually do the tethering method, that is where the dog is with you, literally attached sometimes with a leash, ALL the time. Anytime they start to sniff, squat, circle, you take them to the pad (or outside). When this wasnt possible or when I was out, they would go in an expen with wee wee pads on one side and a bed on the other.
