If I were you I wouldn't hesitate to get him, but take him straight to the vet first, and have him do the works on him. Maybe you know someone without dogs who can "quarantine" him a couple of weeks after the vet visit, just to be safe.

I noticed I left out the "sure" after it was too late to edit. Maybe it's just wishful thinking.
