I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() I'm not sure how it works on other breeds with eye shine relating to coat type, the link I posted only addressed yorkies.

I know you were talking about Yorkies, but thought others might like to know about the blue and amber eyes of my dogs. It looks really strange. I am very sorry if I was not suppose to talk about other dog types. Thanks for the info, though.

| ![]() This is very interesting. I wonder if the type of light you are using makes a difference too. Under regular lights, Mylee's eyes look blue, but under florescent, they look more green. I couln't tell you if she has a silky coat or a cotton coat. She was white on top before turning tan (and it did seem to happen over night) Her coat appears cotton, but it looks like it might be transforming over to silky. The first two are under regular light, the last is florescent, and they may be a couple weeks apart as far as age. She was 4 months in these pictures, and she is 7 months now. The last is a current photo to show her coat.

| ![]() The blue eyes actually show up in almost all young puppies because of the amount of 'true black' in their coats. It's not until the pups have begun to break that the "green eye shine rule" can be applied with any degree of accuracy. The general consensus is that if the pup is still showing cool tones (green/blue-green) at 8 months, the coat is indeed a true silk. Cotton coats will show red or amber (warmer) tones, and a mixed coat is often somewhere in between (yellow-green.) But the blue eyes most younger puppies exhibit really can't tell you much about the puppy's coat at all ![]() |

| ![]() Honestly, I've never understood the difference in coat types. Smokey's eyes have always shown up a really bright neon yellow in pictures. As a puppy he wasn't black, but a really dark charcoal gray. He is now a very pale silver (almost white) and has a lot of pale tan mixed in with it, not just tan on the legs and face. He's changing colors again and has a charcoal silver stripe down his spine. His coat was awful as a puppy. His hair would be full of horrible matts. After we cut him down real short, his hair has been amazing and doesn't matt at all. If we go awhile without bathing and brushing though, his hair get really straggly and stringy. Chip's eyes have shown up like a dark teal. He's black, even at almost 4 years old and has silver "highlights" as I call them. We keep his hair in a puppy cut, but he never matts either. His hair has always been perfect. From what I've read, the green eyes mean a silky coat and the red eyes mean a cotton coat... correct? I guess I never really understood the real difference between the coat types. The first picture is of Chippy and in one eye you can see a dark teal color. Poor baby was actually sick when I took that picture. He was almost a year old in that picture, but he really hasn't changed all that much. The second picture was of Smokey around 8 months old before we chopped off all his puppy hair. You can see that his hair wasn't actually black, but more of a charcoal gray. The third picture was of both of them together. Chip almost a year old and Smokey about 8 months. You can see the difference in their eyes - Smokey, still showing a yellow and Chip more of a blue-green. The fourth picture was around last Christmas, so the boys were both almost 3. Smokey still has the yellow eyes, but you can see how pale silver his coat is.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | ![]() From these pictures I would say Chip has a silk coat, Smokey probably has a modified coat which is a combination of silk and a soft coat. As far as their coloring that can change with yorkies throughout their life. Their color changes from puppy colors to their adult. And, then as adults age their color can change going lighter, especially a female will go lighter.
