If you want a more laid back dog, rescue an older Yorkie or get a Maltese ![]()

| ![]() I ran across this thread when I did a search for Shorkies. We bought a female Shih-tzu with the intentions to breed her to Peti. Shorkies are supper cute. Our Shih-tzu seems to be calmer that our yorkies (which are pretty calm as far as Yorkies go). Are you still in search for a dog? We have a female Yorkie that we are planning to sell after she has the litter that she is pregnant with right now. We weren't going to breed her then surprise, surprise. She just has a couple of flaws that I feel shouldn't be breed back. She is a supper beautiful dog and has a great disposition. and is Potty trained. However, she can't go until she has pups in 6 weeks and then they are weaned. Otherwise we will have shorkies born (hopefully) at the end of March and they will be for sale. if interested e-mail me danschaben@frontiernet.net

| ![]() Just a bit of info here. I used to have a Basenji, and I loved her dearly. Kira was beautiful and sweet, and quiet. However, they are sight hounds and not lap dogs. Kira was snuggly if she was cold or in the mood, otherwise she was always on the go. She loved to run and chase the cat, and the kids, or whatever moved. I had small children at the time and if they went outside and she followed, she was gone like a rocket. They can also climb most any fence. I would not have called her needy, as far as attention, but she did need lots of exercise and stimulation. Not a dog to crate all day while you are at work either. I was home with her, and she was fine, but very distructive if left alone. I loved her looks and sassy attitude, but not a breed for everyone. |

| ![]() I would say to look into a Maltese. There are MANY Maltese rescues out there BTW. But I think any dog can be yappy or barky depending on how you raise them. People who let their cute lil puppies bark, then change the rules when they are older and the bark is less cute, have a big problem. If you get a puppy, start training right away.

| ![]() Yes, I'm still trying to figure out what breed would be good. A friend suggested a sheltie (do they shed much?). I would most likely get an older dog that has been trained, well-socialized, etc. I was considering a dog that didn't "pass" the service dog training...I know there is a term for these dogs but can't remember what it is. |

| ![]() I have a sheltie/lab cross and she is beautiful small like the sheltie but golden like the lab. I find she is more for the adults than the children though but I do not know if this is the characteristic of the sheltie or the lab. She is a very good watch dog and can hear people coming even is they are a few houses down which causes alot of barking it can be bothersome but my husband works nights and I have a hearing problem so she is great for me. She lives in the window just watching. She loves to be loved but like a said by adults , she is fond of our own kids because she is use to them but does not like to be bothered by other kids she will usually go to her kennel if they bother her to much. It took her a while to warm up to our yorkipoo, Nelly, but now they just love to play. We also have a terrier mix and if you can find one like him at a shelter you would be so lucky, he does not bark, he loves to be cuddled and is great with everyone and is not that big either, he only weighs about 20 pounds and he is almost 14 years old. The only problem is I do not know what his mix is because he was at the shelter but I will post a picture of him and of the sheltie and of course, Nelly our new member to the family. |

| ![]() Back to the Sheltie, I have an aunt who has a couple and they shed like crazy. And if you don't brush them often it's worse. We just got rid of our lab and I swear we will never own a shedding dog again. That hair gets every where. She spent the night with a friend once a few months ago, and when he moved last month, he found her hair everywhere that he moved furniture. Even under his waterbed matress! ![]() I think it all depends on the dogs individual presonallity. We have one Yorkie that barks at alot, but I wouldn't call her yippy. She just barks at other dogs and when some ones at the door. We have two that don't seem to bark at all. Unless the other one gets them too riled up. And our Shih-tzu is a real bum and just lays around and never seems to make a sound. Best of luck in you search ![]()

I think the best thing for you to do is look in the rescues for an adult. That way it will already be house trained (not as needy as a puppy), and will fit best in your household. | |
