| Paper Training after being Housebroken? As you may recall, our 8 year old Buster died of pancreatic cancer on March 17. Since we've had a Yorkie in the household for over 30 years we could not deal with the void left by his death for very long. We located a reputable breeder only 50 miles away and placed a deposit on "Bailey" who'll be 12 weeks old on May 2, when we'll be able to bring her home. On our second visit to the breeder to check on Bailey's progress the breeder mentioned a 3 lb. approximate 2 year old female that she'd taken back from the original owner after the placement did not work out due to a divorce. Long story short, we brought Buttons home last Sunday and we've all been getting used to each other for the last week. In the past, all our Yorkies have been paper trained. However, Buttons is totally housebroken and we have not been able to get her to go on paper we have on our enclosed patio. Does anyone have any advice as to how you've been able to get your Yorkie to switch back to paper after he or she was trained to go outside? Any help is appreciated!!!! |

| Congratulations on your addition to your family. I recently went through the same process switching a house-trained 8 month old to piddle pads. It took about 2 weeks to reach 100% perfect pad use. The change probably would have been faster had my older boy not guarded the piddle pads as his own. Re-training is a lot like training a pup for the first time. Limit Buttons' freedom in your home; confine her to areas where you can keep her under close supervision. Make sure she has quick and easy access to the pad at all times. Anticipate her need to potty and take her to the pad. Choose keywords like "go potty" to encourage her. When she does things correctly, praise her profusely and maybe give a small treat (I give one kibble). Never stop praising. The first week, try putting about 4 pads down in one large square to enlarge the target area. My guy had no problem peeing on the pad, but he required a lot of convincing that it was okay to poop there too. I had to confine him to a small area lined with pads and sit with him until he did it. When he saw how happy I was, he finally understood what to do. Hope this helps and that you have great success. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I recently took in a elderly male who was use to being walked 3 times a day just long enough to go potty. The first few days I let him out with my one girl who goes outside (when she feels like it) but after that I noticed him using the pee pads that my other 2 girls use. If there is someway you could get her pee scent on a pad maybe she would start to use it. My condolences on your loss of Buster.Congratulations on your new little girl.
