| Question about the age most yorkie girls mature I know all dogs are different - my girl is just over 5 pounds last time she was weighed and is 5 months old as of April 15th. I am having some sort of complex about getting her spayed. I want to do it before she comes into heat but I want to wait long enough so I will know if her baby teeth will fall out as they should. Two vets have said she has an immature mouth, she has the front teeth in but the large incisiors/canines have not started to come in yet - and I don't think the molars have either. I have an appointment to have a consult for a vet appointment May 7th - she would be 6 months May 15th. I would ideally like to wait until May 14th but don't want her to go into heat before she gets spayed. Question to YTers with girls: How old was your girl when she went into heat (and how much did she weigh)? or When did you have your girl spayed (and how much did she weigh)? I know you have to be careful with the small girls ... but as my girl is already 5 pounds she should be OK that way. I got my boy neutered when he was just over 6 months and he recovered nicely. I am worried about the surgery, but I am also worried about the timing! If I go too soon and she has to risk going under for the removal of baby teeth that is adding additional danger, and if I wait too long she goes into heat then I miss out on benefits of spaying before the first heat cycle. Ohhhhh ... what to do, what to do?!? Thanks in advance for all the help!

| My girl is just under 5 pounds, I had her spayed at 10.5 months old and she had not gone into heat yet... she had also lost all of her baby teeth by then so we didnt have to have any removed.

| although she COULD go into heat anytime, it is much more common for these little ones to go into heat the first time around 8-10 months old. Both my girls are 5 pounds and one went into heat the first time at 9 months, the other at 8 months

| What a relief that you both had Yorkies who matured later! I feel better now and hope we can wait until the 14th. Thank you so much for replying, sure made a difference in my day.

| I was in the same spot you are in ... do I wait for those teeth to fall out, and risk first heat, or do I go ahead and get her spayed and get those stubborn teeth out of the way, too. At around 5 1/2 months, all four adult canines surfaced and the baby teeth were still there. The lower adult teeth came in on the inside of the baby teeth, but the baby teeth did gradually loosen up and fall out, with the new adult teeth then moving into proper position. It was the upper baby canines that were a problem. The adult teeth came in right in front of the baby teeth, and there was no crowding at all with the adult teeth growing in. The baby teeth weren't in the least bit loose, and there was nothing pushing on them or crowding them, so I finally decided that nothing was going to loosen them and they would have to be pulled, so no need to wait any longer on the spay. She was spayed yesterday, and they pulled the teeth then. She will be 7 months old on Sunday. I think you can safely wait through 7 months, there is only a very slight risk that she could go into heat by then.

| I had Bailey spayed at 7 mos of age and 5 lbs. She had not come into heat yet. They pulled 2 or three teeth then. All went well. Good luck

| I actually just had Roxy spayed a week ago. She is 3.5 years old and weighs 3.5lbs. I was worried to death about having her put to sleep b/c she is so small, but after several consultations with my vet, I went through with it and had a complete dental work-up as well (checked and cleaned!) She didn't need any teeth pulled though. Roxy came into my life when she was 2, so that's why she wasn't spayed when she was little (before her first heat). I said all of that to say this ....lol Roxy did wonderful! No problems at all! She came home the same day as the surgery and was trying to play with her little brother, Charlie! lol Crazy girl! GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYING!!!!

| Thanks everyone! Nice to hear that everyone had good experiences. Your girls seem to be a bit smaller than my River as she is over 5 pounds now at just over 5 months. Hopefully she won't mature faster just because she's larger. Thanks again for all your input! Very nice to hear from so many Yorkie moms that are worried about their little girl as much as I am worried about mine.
