| ![]() There are lots of guides on what you need to have your dog vaccinated for, and not all are needed. I've always had my boys vaccinated for bordatella, rabies, and dhpp (pretty sure that's all they need, too). I believe they've had them all at once before. They haven't ever had reactions, but they are sometimes kinda sore and grumpy, just like a baby is when they get their shots. They get Interceptor each month, too. It's a pill that they take for heartworm and some other parasites. Also, it looks much better for you if you use correct spelling (ie: "because", not "becuz"), and it makes it much easier for us to read. Thanks!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Timing of the puppy vaccines is very important. At 8-9 weeks old, a puppy may or may not have antibodies from mommy still floating around. If yes, the vaccine will be rendered useless (Mom's antibodies will kill it). If no, the vaccine will do it's intended job of making the pup produce it's own antibodies. The vaccines are repeated in 4 weeks (no later...they become less effective) This set of vaccines boosters the first (increases the level of antibodies to an accepted theraputic amount), and protects the pups who had Mom's antibodies destroy the vaccines the first time around. The third set of vaccines boosters the second set, more needed for the pups whose maternal protection lasted longer than for the others. It is done 4 weeks later, when antibody production is at the maximum level in the puppy. After 4 weeks the numbers of antibodies begins to decrease, so to have the maximum protection against the specific diseases, vaccines should be given on time. So, in summary, it really only takes 2 vaccines to establish resistance to disease in puppies. But, because we cannot tell exactly when the Mom's protection wears off, (not without alot of testing), 3 vaccines are given to insure protection. Rabies vaccine is given at 6 months, or 2 months after last puppy series vaccs are given. Again, this is the optimal situation, as the timing insures that antibody production from the initial series has stopped, and the pup will be at optimum health to begin producing antibodies against Rabies. It is then boostered at one year of age, and then depending on the laws in your state, is required either every year or every three years. Check with your vet and call a few others in your area just to be sure. Rabies is spread through the saliva of infected mammals, usually from a bite wound. It is rare, but saliva in the eyes, nose, mouth, or a preexisting scratch or open wound can also be a source of transmission. A young girl in Maryland died of Rabies a few years ago. She had no bite wounds, and it was determined that she contracted the disease through petting her dog, who had saliva from an infected animal on it's coat (from rolling on a dead animal: her dog did not have the virus) and from her hand to her eye, nose or mouth. Never vaccinate a sick puppy (if they have a high temperature) as they may be producing antibodies against their illness that could kill the specific antibodies intended to be produced from the vaccine. If this has been done, it would be best to revaccinate at a time when the puppy or dog is in good health. Leptospirosis (Lepto) vaccine can be deadly in small breed dogs. Even if your pup had no adverse reactions to the initial vaccine, the booster vaccine could cause a severe, possibly life-threatening reaction. Any good, knowledgable small breed vet will be aware of this fact, and will know it is not worth the risk to your puppy or dog to vaccinate against this disease. The Lepto vaccine has had a bad track record, with numerous deaths reported in all breeds, but especially in small breeds, and does not give a full years protection: said only to be effective for 5-8 months. To prevent disease: Do not let your dog roll on dead animals. Do not let your dog drink rainwater in puddles in your yard or on the street gutters, (may contain Lepto bacteria from urine of infected animals or wildlife). Wash your hands after handing/petting your dog.
