It's so sad about Lela and all the ones that suffer the same fate. And you're right....all the animals from the high-profile cases somehow get rescued and homes are found. The resources always seem to be there somehow. There are several states with such a low shelter population that they actually import dogs from other countries for adoption. Meanwhile, our own continue to suffer routine euthanasia. There's just something wrong with that equation....

Archie I totally agree with you. It upsets me every time I read a post about someone who has decided to breed their dog. My daughter adopted a dog from our shelter a few weeks ago. It was hard to walk through the shelter and see all of those faces, and know she could only save one.

I saw the original post about Lela, and because I live in California I put it out of my mind. I remember looking at her picture and thinking that she looks like such a sweet dog. Reading this breaks my heart. What does it say about our society that we view animals as being disposable? I know we can't save them all, but still...shame on us that we don't find another solution to the over population.

I agree! It amazes me when I watch Animal Planet and I see Animal Cops New York...and how they do so much to rehab "problem" dogs to get them adoptable and then if you watch Animal Cops Detriot they do nothing to rehab them. If a dog's slightly food guarding they put it to sleep. Thank God they didn't see or realize this at the shelter Barley came from as he stands over his food and runs to it if one gets too close, but who wouldn't if they were starved? And to think that action could have gotten him killed is so saddening. we have become such a selfish nation. Please don't give up. We can make a difference! It'll be one dog at a time, but if it wasn't for people adopting and trying to make a change dogs like Barley wouldn't be here right now. I'm so upset over poor Lela's life! I hope and pray she's running in beautiful green fields and playing with all her doggy friends in heaven. ((((((Hugs)))))))

???? I only wanted a Yorkie, and for a pet, and was very cautious in my research of someone/breeder that met my requirements as a breeder. WOWZA, I had requirements and specificatons from where i was buying my pup, never once did the considering their breeding program?? Are you referring to weather or not it was from a BYB, pet store??
I'm considering a new addition and have yet to find a rescuse with mom/dad on site and the rescue having complete background info of the health of that dog unless they had it since it was born?

By breeding program, I mean what type of a breeder are they? What is their goal in breeding? Have they studied the Yorkshire Terrier Breed? Do they know they health problems associated with the breed? How are the breeding dogs kept? There are so many things that go into making a really great breeder. Please read this site for the differences between backyard breeders and responsible breeders. A COMPARISON OF: Responsible Hobby Breeders and Backyard Breeders/Irresponsible Breeders I just think it's really important to support those breeder who aren't adding to the problem, Joey's breeder will take him back at any time in his life, and a good breeder tries hard to find a life-long home for her pups, she isn't just selling a dog.

By the way, a rescue shouldn't have a mom and dad on site, and look for a rescue that does a vet check. Most rescues don't have puppies; I would be suspicious if a rescue has puppies all the time.
