There is so much misinformation on this forum, it is very difficult for a new member to know what to believe.

Most of the misinformation is given in the heat of an argument when everyone is in attack mode and they will say anything to bring down their prey.

I cannot tell you how many times I have been attacked for some comment I have made and then later in another thread, see those same attackers on the other side of the fence.

You have always been a voice of reason, not taking any side, for the sake of peer approval. I respect your comments and advice.

OK so you don't like the term hobby breeders, non exhibitor breeders? where do we fit. Surly there has to be a better term than BYb to describe someone who tries to breed ethically but chooses not to show.

Sad to say if it is not in their by-laws about some of their breeding practices then nothing can be done. No one broke any rules in regards to off colored yorkies. In terms of reporting another member, the one member has to submit the claim along with x amount of $$$. If the claim is found not true then the person who made the claim loses their $$$. This stops a lot of the petty crap but doesn't protect the dogs. It is very difficult to paint everything black and white but code of ethics, bylaws and constitutions do try to keep everyone on the straight and narrow. The breeders that had off colored Yorkies show up and culled them were more concerned that people thought something got into the hen house...not about being kicked out of YTCA..they were concerned with their breeding reputation I suspect. Same reason breeders that have a Liver Shunt puppy don't say a word...they don't want their reputation tarnished...

I do not like the term hobby breeder because, I have hobbies and no one pays for them and I certainly don't expect to break even with my hobbies. It really bothers me that people would breed for a hobby when we are killing millions of dogs...that is not a hobby.

Actually I really think everyone should go into the showring for their breeding dogs at least once. I don't think you have to go into the AKC ring but I think you can have wonderful experiences with IABCA and NAKC.

I will tell you that I rarely post anything unless I have researched it...to many people on YT post their opinions based on what was told to them and they can't even click on goggle and see what is the truth. Things have changed over the years on how we treat animals from when I was a child but I am blown away when a 20 year old makes statements their grandmothers used to make...

There is so much more information on the internet and wonderful books and I wish more people would spend time reading and searching then coming on YT and asking....

Actually teacup was used when I was young for poodles but I rarely heard it for Yorkies. Even 5 years ago we didn't hear it much on YT..it has been the last few years when America fell in love with the likes of Paris Hilton...why I will never understand..I don't even think she is that cute

I was JUST talking about the older breeders in my area that are good breeders. Even the buyers in my area say teacup no matter if it is yorkie or any breed under 10 pounds. Telling them otherwise is like telling them the grass is blue now.

I am not defending the scum out there selling teacups for $10,000... I was ONLY talking about the breeders and buyers I know in my area.

The word "teacup" is misleading because there is no real meaning for it. Ask 10 people what it means and you'll get 10 answers; it is not used by any breed club. Some breeders use it to mean a dog in the toy division, and it can be any weight, even over standard weight, others use it to mean a dog under 3 pounds, and everything in between. Since there is no definition, it can be used to mislead people, or justify charging more.

Toy on the other hand has a meaning, I'm not sure how the toy group started, but I think it started with the any dog classification that was less than 7 pounds. Remember some breeds have three categories, standard, miniature, and toy, for the yorkie, there is only one category, and that's the toy category. Any dog that does not exceed 7 pounds is considered "standard." Dogs over this weight are still in the toy division, they are just over the standard weight, but a yorkie can't be under the standard weight because that's 7 pounds and under. Perhaps some breeders started using the term because dogs under 5 pounds should not be bred, and so were sold as pets, and to increase the value, they marketed them as "teacups." At one time, nearly everyone who bought a dog wanted to breed it.


I see what you mean, I guess some people could say the word toy implies the dog is a stuffed animal, but it has been used in reference to the smallest category for a long time, and at one time it did seem like people understood that animals of all sizes required care, and that's the part of the "purse puppy" trend that bothers me.

Part of being a good breeder is constant education. I think I was trying to educate people that shelters in San Francisco are getting 2 "teacups" a day, and it wasn't that long ago, that shelters seldom got smaller dogs. Didn't you say that you didn't see the video? Perhaps if you watched it, you would have a better understanding of my point. I'm trying to point out that the term "Purse puppies", isn't a good one for buyers or breeders to use, it implies that these smaller dogs require little care. It doesn't bother me in the least if a puppy buyer uses the term "teacup."

I agree with that. Without the makeup, I bet she is downright unattractive, not to mention high dollar call girl.

I think we are all in agreement on the term "teacup" being misleading. I hope we can also understand that there are those out there that are not using it to get more money, but rather that they really believe that is what they are.

They probably should not be breeding if they do not know the standard and the terminlogy, but that is beside the point.

How many of us would still be using the term if we had not come to YT. I probably would. However I did know that you get a dog spayed and not spaded.

Gawd, Paris Hilton makes me nauseous I have a carrier for Bailey, but only use it when I am going in to stores, we are allowed to take our dogs, but they cannot touch the floor, and it`s difficult to carryi him in my arms while trying to shop, Bailey goes everywhere with me, because I won`t leave him by himself.
