| Cropped Ears??? Hello All!! I have a question that is really puzzling me. Since I got Bentley I have been trying to get his ears up (many of you have replied to previous post) and this has come up several times around town. I have never heard of cropping their ears, just their tails so am I missing something? Here's the scoop: I am from Stillwater, OK...home of the OSU Cowboys and a very good Vet School. We own a Taekwondo school here in town and 1 of our students worked at a Vet Clinic here and recommended that we take Bentley to a Dr. Woodall....I called the office and he was out of town til yesterday so we made an appt to get his ears taped. When I got there the receptionist asked if I had or needed to get his ears cropped. The next taping a different Dr. did it (we had to go back the next day because it was a poor job) That vet asked prior to seeing him if I had his ears cropped. Then yesterday I took him w/ me to the school to drop off some stuff and another person asked, this one was a vet student... I don't understand, I can't find anything online about cropping yorkies, but it keeps coming up around here?? Are they just getting confused, since these are all people who have vet backgrounds I would figure they would know if it isn't done. Sorry this is long, I have just been wondering for days now and thought you all would be the best to know!!

Never cropp their ears, never, never never. How old is he? You also be careful of taping them. 1st Shave the backs of the ears to an upside down "V" shape. 2nd tape the ears, then connect the ears with tape in the center. The tape in between the ears will hold each other up. Depending on his age, it may take a few weeks. Be patient they will stand on their own, without cutting them. I'll look up and PM you a website that has a diagram on how to do this. The Vet sounds like he doesn't know Yorkie standards, never crop, never. Good luck

yorkies don't have their ears cropped but IF for some reason they don't stand on their own or taped - your yorkie will be just adorable with his little floppy ears....many people's yorkies ears dont stand no matter what they tried ...they're still very cute and no big deal ... | |

| I also agree with the advice you have gotten so far. I've never taped my yorkie's ears the only thing I do is shave them and then if they stand up fine if not fine. Mollie is 1 1/2 years old and hers stand up about 3/4 of the way if I keep the hair shaved off of them. Wyatt is 10 weeks old and I have shaved his but they really haven't done anything so far his dad's ears stand perfectly erect so we will just wait and see. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I don't think I will tape Wyatt's 1. I just don't have the time and 2. He barely holds still long enuogh for me to shave them let alone do anything else to them. I wouldn't get them cropped. I met a lady one day she had a yorkie and she told me that she had had her ears cropped I told her that I personally would never do that if they stand up that's fine if they don't that's fine. So to ramble on. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

| ears You must inform these vets that it is inhumane to crop a Yorkies ears. Please ask them what vet school taught them this practice..I would like to make a complaint. The more knowlegdable you are, they more you can take charge of your Yorkies well being..of course you were not haivng the ears cropped, but quoting the standard would wise them up. Best wishes |

| WOW!!! A lot has happened during the time I have been recuperating. I so agree with Pat....when you find out the vet school that those vets attended please post. They will get a piece of my mind. Only a tiny piece cause I have little to spare!! I HATE all this talk about cropping Yorkies' ears. At least 5 years ago, I hear d from a breeder from NC that breeders there were doing the cropping. I went off like a rocket!!! I have been lucky that during the years I have not had one Yorkie whose ears didn't stand. Til now. My Biewtis cannot make up their minds about the ears. One day both up, one up, none up. Next day, all different. But, I think they are beauties anyway as most Yorkie pet owners do. BTW, at the same time I heard about the ear cropping, I also heard about a whole litter of MinPins bleeding to death after their cosmetic surgeries.. |

ALso Massage their ears, I think, it helped to make Baileys ears stand up. I did it all the time when he sat in my lap, and he still loves it.

| Cropping a yorkie's ears is bad news. No reason for it at all. I've been assisting a breeder with whelping for 4 years and have never seen/had a yorkie's ears cropped. This is more of a practice for breeds like dobermans, where the ears won't stand up on their own (because they are naturally floppy), but how threatening does a floppy eared doberman look? I personally don't believe in ear cropping of any dog. I think it's a bit barbaric since all the ones I've seen were done at an age where they definitely remember the trauma. When I was in Austria I was shocked that it is illegal to dock the tails and crop the ears of dogs. Breeders often take their litter over the border to Hungary or the Czech Republic to get it done. I personally have no problem with docking the tails, since it is done at such a very young age...it's a bit like circumcision. Quickly done, no memories. |

| I had problems with Roxie's ears standing up until I got the hair around them clipped. Since she is a cottony/wool coat her hair is so thick. Even at 9 months her ear will get a little flop in them if I let the hair grow too much on them. Clipping and massaging definitley does help. But up or down they are still so cute.

| I have never heard of cropping yorkie ears. Gabbi's ears were up when I picked her , She was so adorable. A couple days at home they flopped, shaved and taped. One would stand up, go down and the other would stand up. Not until she got rid of all her baby teeth did they decide to stand up. I was so sure that I had gotten a defective furgal. My groomer charged only a couple of dollars to keep her ears shaved as they are suppose to be. |

| I have to give input, no, no, no, please do not crop a yorkie's ears. Whether they stay up or not, they have the cutest faces of all. You can tape ears, sprinkle Carnation Instant Milk on food, massage then, but in the end, they may stand or not, it's a cartilage issue. When I first thought about getting a yorkie, I was so paranoid that my yorkie have the best look, which meant ears up, but I have found they are just as cute when down, or even one up and one down. |
