Ok, so I have this beautiful yorkie. His name is Gizmo. I love him to death, but something has to change...

This lovely little boy has taken to chewing and biting us whenever and wherever he can reach. He used to always be of for a scritch on the tummy, but now all he wants to do is bite. We get on the floor for a game of ball and he'll go around us and bite. For such a little guy, his teeth are sharp! Ever see the Bill Cosby skit about "Jeffery, Jeffery, Jeffery"?

Nothing is sacred, he's not partial to any part of the body or our clothing. I was sitting with him last night trying to play with him and he kept jumping at my chest and face, mouth wide open, razor sharp teeth snapping. I had to get up.

And don't think that getting up will always be the end of this snarling session. Oh nooo... it's not unusual for him to go with us after we've stood up. Of course, we're dragging a snarling baby boy with us, because he's latched onto a pant leg. ::sigh::

I read in a Yorkie magazine that spraying them with water would be a good control. I refuse to yell at him or spank, he's too small for that. But for the past three nights he's looked as if he just had a bath. There's got to be a better way.

I love this this little 13 week old guy to pieces, but it's becoming obvious to me that there's something he needs and we're not providing it. Any help that you can offer would be so greatly appreciated.

when Tia was that age and teething. from the off we started to say OWW really loud , she soon let go and got the idea.Give him lots of teething rings and maybe a kong to chomp on , remember this is short term but don't let little Gizmo think its ok to bite even in play. Hope this helps, keep us posted.

Im not keen on the water idea incase he catches a chill.

It's true it's a stage they go through while teething. We used the sound "Oww" real loud ,too and it has worked. That is how Gizmo's littler mates would react to rough play. Substitute your fingers and feet with chew toys like a puppy kong, it worked for us. Sophie no longer plays that way or grabs at our feet when we walk and now when we lay down on the floor to play she just covers us with little kisses.

Now that we have 2 pups and bully sticks the chewing on us has stopped. They play with each other and chew on the bully sticks or bully crack as we now call them here.

Oh, that would be wonderful. Gizmo is really smart, so I know he understands that this is unacceptable. It's almost as if he's compelled to do it.

He really gets wound up in the evenings. He bounds and runs through the living room like a gazelle, and there's an audible sound every time his body contacts the floor. If he was finished with his shots, I'd take him for a walk or a run to use up all that extra energy.

He's really a great little guy and I look forward to having him as a companion for many many years to come. As soon as my husband finishes shaving, we're all taking a trip to the pet store to get a kong and teething rings. Most of Gizmo's toys are plush with squeakers because that's what he's picked out when we were in the store. Not that he's spoiled or anything...

When Dezi was teething I used to wear a Puppet toy on my hand
He still loves his puppet & I also said OW loudly if he bit my bare skin
it really does work

My "twins" were vicious biters at that age. They are much better now. Give him lots of chew toys and the "owww" suggestion is a good one.

Pixie went through this biting as well and haning on to my pant leg.
I tried clapping my hands and saying NO when she did that and it worked. As for the biting I always would say OUCH in a high pitch voice and then stand up and ignore her for a few seconds. It is a stage and if you get a handle on it they will outgrow it. We are now working on biting while she is getting brushed! lol

Just a phase, at this time they need a varitiey of chew toys, not just one, but many textures, firmness and shapes.....Good luck

I was told to let out a loud yelp like another puppy would to let him know that it is not allowed. Mostly it is probably a phase but you want to stop it as soon as you can. We would get up and walk away from Zeus when he used to bite us. Turn your back anything to ignore his bad behavior. Hang in there it does get better.

We're in Panama City, Florida Panhandle.. We just got back from the store with Gizmo. We bought him a Greenie bone, a very strange ball that looks like an atom molecule with a bell in it, and a Kong. Right now he's happily chewing the Greenie.

I want to thank everyone for their responses. There was never a question of Gizmo not keeping his home with us. I was just worried about him not having what he needed. I'm always "lurking" on the board here, reading everything, but decided I needed to get some answers to specific questions, and **Poof** Yorkie Talk to the rescue!

Ha-ha! Kacee still has her puppet, too. It's a dog and we named him "Brutus."

Bully sticks are very good for them while they are chewing everything. Mine loved them then. She doesn't really chew on anything now.

I f the Greenie bone is the same thing in the States as in Canada be carefull with it. By that I mean watch him as he chews - take away the little pieces that will break off. Not good for them to swallow this.

Also try a mini teething ring for dogs. That was good for all three of ours.
