Yes, some yorkies stay black like this. My Murphy (almost 2) and Tate (just turned 1) are both still dark.

I think it depends on the coat texture. Rily has a cottony coat. His black puppy coat matted so much that I had to cut him pretty short at about 4 months. Saydee has a silky coat and at 5 months she still doesn't mat. She is still black and gold.

Sophie went through a bad stage of having a lot of mats too, and it took me a while to figure out that was her puppy coat growing out. I love her silky, soft hair, and it hardly mats at all now!!!!
