Where does the puppy coat go? Where does the puppy coat go? How does it transition from puppy coat to adult coat? I mean, do you have to cut off the ends to get rid of the puppy coat, or do the ends also change to an adult coat? Sorry if its a silly question, just trying to deal with the puppy to adult coat mats and am just wondering if you have to cut the puppy coat off anyway, I might as well do it now, but otherwise I will stick it out because I want long coats. |

I had the same problem, Tiger's coat was covered in knots and mats, so i sat there with a fine tooth comb and brushed them all out. I had to cut a few of them out, the ones that were really matted. It took me about 2 weeks. Doing an hour or two everyday. Now i give him a quick brush every day and the knots havn't come back. I still do not know about when his adult coat is going to come through, but his fur is looking lovely now. And after all that brushing he actually enjoys to be brushed and barks at the brush on the table for me to brush him!!! I know this isnt a proper answer, but i hope it helps all the same! happy brushing :) |

Yeah, i think they just grow out. Kind of like how highlights grow out if you don't retouch them. Eventually you'd need to trim some of the puppy coat. My puppy is 3 months now and his colors are changing already near his head. :( |
The puppy coat just grows out :) For awhile you just have a puppy that looks like it has black tips! When Layla was in that transition stage, nobody believed that I didn't dye her that way! |

You never cut or trim a puppy's coat. It just evendually grows out. Now when it reaches the floor we trim, so it does not have to drag. I have had to trim about 5 inches off since the last 5 months of the girl I am showing now. And yes you should never have to take so long to get a yorkie's coat back into condition. You should never have to groom so much and you should never have that many mats. Stay on a weekly schedule and it will be easier to manage. |
I didnt want my dog in full coat so I just shaved it all off , it was a knotted mess even though I brushed her all the time.. she does not have a silky coat , more of a modified coat... she is not a show dog she is a crazy, play in the snow, play fetch kind of dog.. she has a schnauzer cut ( sort of) very very cute!! ;) |
I had Apple's puppy hair cut off @ 9 months old (that's her @ 9 months, in the avatar)...The black puppy hair had gotten stringy, and it knotted up so bad...She looked soooooooo much better, after the cut, and it was so much easier to brush her hair...Now she's 14 months old, and all that steel/gray/silver/blue hair, that I thought she would have forever, has golden roots growing out!!! I think she's going to end up being all golden...And I'm am totally surprised, but not, at all, upset...I think the solid golden yorkies are beautiful... Right now, she's gold and silver and steel and blonde...Oh my, she's like a rainbow lolol...so pretty..... |

Aaaah well if it just grows out, I guess maybe Pixel isn't going to change because he is all black on his back with no roots. The hair on his head has been changing since he was 5 months though. I guess maybe since he's half chi, he will keep the black. Though he's only 1 year and 5 months so maybe he will still change?? |

Is there a chance that the coat will keep the black and tan color? Lucky is a year old and I only see hints of a silver around his back legs underneath the dark hair.The hair on his head has gotten tremendously lighter but otherwise he is still very much black and tan....... |
