| We had a little debate going on... Does your dog know his/her name or does he/she go by tone of your voice? Wellll I said that the pooch goes by their name... then I demonstrated it... My boys are Rocky and Nicky... Sooooooo I tried just saying, Ocky or Icky... The looked at me but didn't really respond (and were probably thinking I was sniffing something too lol) Then I went with just the sound of their names and not saying it, still they only looked at me and kept playing... Finally I let out a Rocky and Nicky and they both came to me... They got treats for putting up with there crazy mama lol... What are your takes on it?

| I'm on the fence. I think it depends on the intelligence of the dog. I have heard not to name a dog something that sounds like a command. I know with I can call one name and any of my 3 will look up. It may just be them wanting to know if the others are getting something. Good debate topic.

| Thanks, It was just something that we got to talking about one day, and I just wonderd what the doggie mama's a papa's thought here. I thought it would be cool to get others takes on it. Good point, depending on the dogs intelligence!!! That thought never crossed my mind. lol Quote:

YT 2000 Club Member | my dogs respond to thier name. You say Tucker, he looks up and comes to you. My husband and my kids all have different voices and ways of talking/saying thier names and you say his name he looks at you and he comes. If you say one of the other dogs names, they will look up in interest but wont move untill you say thier names. I too have heard not to name your dog that sounds similar to a command. My brother in law has a dog named Nemo and thier trainer told them that it was to close to NO, thats why they were having so much trouble with training him.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Tuffy does the same thing. We've started referring to him as "the boy" when we're talking about him to one another. I'm sold on Yorkies being of uber intelligence

| They definitely know their names...when I call mine the only one that comes running is the one I called. Now, if I say 'come on kids' they all come running. However, Maddie is pretty independant so she comes when she wants to but she always comes when I say 'are you hungry?' or 'do you want supper?'. Yes, the girl is ruled by her tummy |

| Jackson knows his name, I'm pretty sure. I can say it in any tone and he responds.

| Okay, I just tested this on Winston, I walked into the living room...talked to my husband, then stopped and said "Winston"...in the same voice, he picked up his sleepy head and turned to look right at me, with a questioning look on his face. Yep, he knows his name. Ticked off that I woke him up, but he most definitely responded to his name.

| My 2 know their names and respond to them no matter what tone. I've tried different tones as well as different levels and they respond each time.
