I couldnt justify paying more than 500.00 for a healthy pet qualitly dog.. for a show dog, breeder etc.. I wouldnt pay more than 1000.00 BUT the going rates for dogs in my area is pretty low and honestly when I first joined this group and discovered what some of you paid for your yorkies I just about fell out of my chair..the more reading I did and learning, I understood why you paid what you did..

I used to think people were crazy for paying over $500 for a dog, and I really thought $500 was pushing it. But now I am one of those crazy people

and realize the importance in finding a responible breeder and am willing to pay to make sure I get that. There are tons of dogs listed locally for a lower price, but I also see where they come from most of the time and it is not where I would want to purchase one of my furbabies from personally.

Ive seen yorkies in the papers in my area akc registered anywhere between 250.00 to 1000.00..

Ive seen a very few partis run as low as 900.00. Dogs arent generally highly priced here. I was a poodle person and when I got Tucker (yorkie mix) he was the first "yorkie" Ive ever owned. So I didnt do any research on the breed untill he was born. Thats when I found this board, read and fell in love with them. So up untill then I didnt know how much they actually were.

Ahhhh! The classifieds....now I understand.

You are right on with that statement!!
I don't know about upstate, but I have a Very reputable breeder here on LI who "breeds to show" and my furbaby is 2k. Getting her 1/26/10 BTW!!! Can't wait!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't you "register" any dog with the AKC? AKC doesn't mean good/healthy/breed standard...right???

Like my Mama always told me - you get what you pay for. Just look at cars for example - there are lots of different prices based on the kind/make of car it is. If you want a really nice one - don't expect to get one for a thrift store bargin price. The dogs I have - I paid a lot for and expected that. I did not want to settle for less. I knew it cost a lot (in time and money) to breed the very best.

Yes, as long as the parents are both AKC. I have seen some pretty horrible places that have AKC registered dogs. That is why research is so important.

No, not all dogs can be registered with AKC. They must have both parents that are also registered with AKC to register the pups.

Now AKC does have a new program where dogs that are not registered may - but it is only giving them a number to be in rally/obediance competition, not confirmation, and they must be spayed or neutered. So this group cannot have a litter.

Thank you! I agree with you about doing your research. And also, not "convincing" yourself that different "issues" of a particular breed are not "concerns".

My DH bought my Pixie and paid 1500, she was my 30th wedding anniversary gift! I told a fib to my kids how much she cost though! lol

I was also thinking and wanted to bring this up. If you are looking to pay the least for a pup - don't expect the breeder to do what they need to do to produce nice healthy pups of any quality. I always think of what cut backs they made in order to save and thus sell their pups lower to move them out. You might save when buying, but expect to pay more at the vets. So you really are not saving, but bought your way into a huge headache, less money in your own pockets, and more worries and heartache. I have heard such sad stories, where people have tried to save.

Yes, you have to do your research and on the other hand you do not want to pay too much for a pup not worth it. One should educate themselves before buying.

Mary is right. This is why you research and go to homes and see for yourself the quality. This is why you have to educate yourself and know what to look for.
