| Does Axle have all of his shots? I would be hesitant to take him to the groomer before he is fully vaccinated.

| I would make sure your puppy has all his shots first. Many groomers require that the dogs have certain shots before they will even schedule an appointment. But taking your puppy in at an early age to get them used to being groomed is a good idea. I started mini-grooms (myself) with my puppies and they are at the point now where they will stand very still for me on my grooming table at only 20 weeks.

| If he's had all his shots by 14 weeks, they were probably started too soon which means he isn't fully protected. Puppies get antibodies from nursing which block vaccinations given before 9-10 weeks old. Unfortunately, breeders who sell their Yorkie puppies too soon (before 12 weeks) also give them their vaccinations too soon. Puppies need the last set of vaccination at about 18 weeks for full protection. They are especially at risk for parvo if vaccinations are completed before then. In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs |

| Just tell the groomer, no matter what, you just want your baby to have a good grooming experience so that he will not mind going to be groomed. I waited too long with my Yorkie so that I could not get close to him the scissors. I finally took him to the woman who gave him obedience training. They did not do much grooming, but monkeyed with him alot, and now I can groom him myself. I bought a video that shows how to do the whole thing. |
