The ugly, awful truth....

Ok....so, no mother likes to admit that their babies aren't perfect! So, here is the spill on Saydee: SHE EATS POOP. Ok, there, I said it...so now help me, please! I have tried putting meat tenderizer on her food and feeding her pineapple, to no avail.....any more suggestions?

Rio went through a phase of eating her poo at about 5-6 months old. I tried feeding pineapple but she still would occasional try to eat her poo. The only thing I could do is just be sure to pick it up literally seconds after she's done it. She's 9 months old now and seems to have grown out of her poo-eating phase thank goodness!

Jasmin eats poo too, not hers but her son, I also tried everything and she is doing good now, but still eating poo one in a while

Yeah, we try to pick it up ASAP, but she is also "one sneaky little gal" and potty training seems to be going backwards these days. she will sometimes hide to "go" and is eating it by the time we realize what she has done! I think this is another disadvantage to pee pee pad training. Sometimes I wished I hadn't started with that. It's a good thing that she is so darn cute...I tell ya!

Yeah, I've heard that mother dogs will do that to keep the "nursery" clean. And that pups will do it because they saw mommy doing it.

Our vet said it's okay if she eats her own poo, because it's her "own". It's not safe for her to eat other dogs' poo though.

The worst is when they eat their poo and then want to come give you a kiss! LOL!

Ok~so lets talk about poop eating! Tell me what brand of food are you feeding Saydee?

When you say that you tried pineapple, how much and how often? You need to be VERY consistent when it comes to pineapple for it be really work. You need to feed it several times a day and for at least a week for it to fully work into their system and change the poop.

You can also use canned pumpkin in the food to also change to poop or you can even do pineapple AND pumpkin.

I PROMISE you that it will work if you do it correctly! Most people that say the pineapple didn't work were not feeding enough and were not consistent.

Teddy Boo eats his, and Barney's poop whenever he can. Barney gets really mad, and barks hysterically to tell him to stop.

I hope you have good luck with pineapple or pumpkin. Neither worked for us!! We fed pineapple and pumpkin very consistently and often but still it did not work. The forbid and potty mouth also did not work.

Teddy is a year old and now he only once in a while takes a nibble. We taught him the leave it command and he does listen and we distract him but we can't watch him 24 hours a day.

Oh and he does try to give us a kiss. Uggh, some days we have to have him brush his own teeth more than once. thank goodness he enjoys washing his mouth out!!

Well, I probably didn't give her enough pineapple because I was afraid she would get the runs, so, maybe I'll try that again....and, pumpkin, you say? I'll try that too. Thanks!

Tia is always on the hunt for cat poop in the garden and Remy likes to eat Tias poop .I have also tried all the remedies to no avail. I hope in time they will outgrown this habit but I'm not holding my breath.

She will not get the runs from pineapple. I would suggest that you give it to her like a treat several times a day. Mine are not poop eaters but LOVE pineapple for a treat and it does not make them sick.

If you feed 2 times a day give 1 or 2 pieces right around meal time you do not need to mix it into the food. I would suggest that you use the chunks and if they are too large cut them smaller. You do not need to mix it into her food.

If you want to try using canned pumpkin you need to use the Packed Pumpkin not the pie filling. Mix a can of packed pumpkin with canned Evangers dog food and then added a spoon full to each bowl of food I fed. I liked the Evangers since it is 100% game meat and did not want to add any grain fillers into their diet.

I mixed the to ingredients together in a storage container and added a little with warm water at each meal, just enough to coat the kibble. The pumpkin is also soothing to their tummies too. When my Doodlebug was a tiny puppy I fed him the pumpkin mixture because he always had an upset tummy after eating and it totally helped.

You need to be sure you are feeding a high quality dog food that is low in grains. If you are feeding a food that is high in grains, you are pretty much just making a warm loaf when it comes out the other end.

One final thing that you NEED to follow PICK UP THE POOP IMMEDIATELY!

I guarantee that this will work! There have been many threads on YT about this exact same subject and everyone that followed these step CONSTANTLY was successful. The enzymes in the pineapple and pumpkin changes the digestive tract and makes the poop unappetizing even to the most hard core poop eaters. It will take at LEAST a week for the enzymes to adjust so please just be consist and use lots of patience.

Please do not let you dog eat its own poop! If you vet told you that I would look for a new vet. It's pretty simple to fix if you are just consistent. There are members here that had puppymill rescues that were able to STOP their dogs from eating their poop. If you can change this habit in a puppymill rescue you can stop a puppy from eating poop!

Thanks! I gave her & Rily pineapple last night and again this morning before feeding their regular food. Canned, I didn't have any fresh. I have given them both pumpkin before as well. I do pick the poop up as soon as I know about it, but Saydee sometimes hides to do her business. We are working harder on the peepad training, but she is proving to be more difficult to train than Rily. I have been feeding TOTW. I haven't heard of Evanger's, can you buy it locally at TSC or PetSmart, or do you have to order it online? I get their food at my local TSC because I live in a rural area and don't have a lot of choices. From what I have learned here, TOTW seemed to be my best option.
