Yes, dew claws, I'm fine with because it's for a safety/health reason. Jackson still has his dewclaw and luckily, we haven't had any issues with it yet.

hi, my little man has a dew claw on the back leg, it will have to be removed, it catches on everything, before he actually rips it off, my mates dog riped its one right off[running through fields] and ended up in vets,

Not to be obtuse, but I've never understood people who are okay with SOME alterations and not others. The dew claw is tantamount to a thumb. Who didn't slam their fingers in doors when they were little or get them stuck in the vcr? The potential for trouble is not great enough for removal; in fact some vets are moving away from it as something we used to do but should have put into it more thought.

i understand what u sayin but my boy has only one foot at the back, and the dew claw is what we call a floating one , that sits away out and only a piece of skin holding it, he will be getting it off when he has to go about the leg to be either took up moe or the whole limb to be removed

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but since Yorkies were bred for ratting and going to ground after vermin, weren't the tails originally docked for their protection. Same as the dew claws, which have no function, but can get torn up with digging and running in rough terrain.

yes thats right, i have 1 with tail which i love and 1 without and she is also beautiful, i think now that they are not used for that anymore, they shud not need tails off, but i do agree about dewclaws, if they cause problems, jmo it will probably one day be the same all over the world about docking, some countries its against the law, thats why people have such different opinions

i do not believe in docking but i was told by the breeder that Gatsby was born with a naturally docked tail its about 2or3 inches and his sisters tail was bent almost to the base so she had it removed the other puppy had a full tail. I have been told this was impossible, but i do not know she showed me pics of the girls bent tail but none of Gatsby. If i had the choice i would like a all natural Yorkie floppy ears and full tail and at least 7 pounds

My yorkie is a rehome so she came with a docked tail. I've seen them with a long tail and they are so pretty. My way of thinking is if they weren't meant to have a tail then they would be born without. I also have a cattle dog and you will see many of them with docked tails which just gripe my behind. AKC won't accept them with a docked tail. The worse part the cattle dog needs that tail as a propeller, to slow down while working. Animals are born with their tails for a purpose.

I've never seen a yorkie at a breeder without a docked tail. I think you would have to order one well in advance and then take whichever one they saved for you by not docking it's tail.

Yorkies ears arent "cropped" to stand. They are suppose to stand, they are born that way. Some dont stand because of whatever reason. I have a yorkie mix that has big floppy ears and nub that I just adore. I honestly prefer the tails docked and do not feel that it is mutalation as long as it's done the correct way. IT is the standard here and I dont see it changing anytime soon.

I like both. Madison's tail is docked. I would love for my next one to have it's tail.

Tail docking has only been illigal over here for a few years so there are still many older dogs with docked tails out there. Some breeders choose to take their pups to Ireland to get it done as its still legal. I've owned yorkies for over 20 years and have had both docked and natural and will admit the docked tail does give a more balanced look. It also is more hygenic as they can get quite messy at times. Some would say well get their coats clipped, for me the yorkie coat is its crowning glory and I love to see them in a long coat. I've seen some shaved almost to the skin, not very attractive. The program you refere to was a very much one-sided and biased, aimed to make show breeders look bad, and yes there are some bad ones out there, but it was filmed to look like the boxer and cavalier camr from show breeders but it was carefully never stated that was the case, the public were just left to make that assumption. Those dogs could have easily come from Joe Bloggs down the street. It was very much a politically based program aimed at bringing yet more money to a certain animal charity, which by the way was then 'forced' to return more than £30.000 donation they'd taken quite happily from the kennel club that year. Very embarressing for them.

I never understand this at all. How is a dog having a full tail more messy?! Jackson has a full tail that I keep with a lot of hair on it and he needs the same exact clippings around his butt as yorkies with docked tails. Hygiene seems like just an excuse really. If it really affected their health and hygiene, all dogs would have docked tails but that's not the case. It's obviously not a big issue. My mindset is just that dogs are born with 'em, let's keep it that way. I totally understand some prefer the look of the docked tail but it just seems kinda selfish to have their tail chopped off cuz it looks better. I also don't think it's a cruel procedure or anything, as their so young, they won't remember it and I've never seen a dog traumitized from it LOL, so it's not that I think it's cruel. Just pointless.
