I have two 4 pounders,7yrs and 1 1/2 yrs they are NOT porcelain dolls at all!! They are quite active I am amazed at how high they can jump to access a chair or pillow, they love being up high I guess because they can get a much better view of their surroundings. The problem is that in spite of their fearlessness they are still small and fragile bone so I have to protect them from themselves sometimes! 4 pounds is a good size and is within the breed standard. Enjoy your new baby and remember that Yorkies really do live up to the "terrier" in Yorkshire Terrier

My Shay is going to be 8 months on the 28th of this month...he is holding steady at 1.9 pounds....he is adorable, and I love him to bits...BUT..and this is a big BUT...he is delicate, I worry all the time (as ppl in here can attest..lol) biggest concern, is he eating enough, some days he eats all his food, I think whohooooo we are going get this going, then the next maybe he will eat 3 bites of his kibble...uggggh!

Make sure to do your homework, read, read and read more...and ask alot of questions, these ppl on here are wonderful and will tell you the truth, whether you like it or not..lol...just kidding. Seriously you will get the honest to goodness truth...they know what there talking about.

Good luck....

I have a little guy who is around 3 lbs and I have to say that compared to the others, we have to be SO CAREFUL around him. He is much more prone to injury from doing just simple, ordinary things whereas the others are not. He can't go up and down the stairs on his own (he could easily go right through the banister) and it takes constant hovering over him to make sure he is not jumping on and off the furniture. I wouldn't trade him for the world, but I do wish he was a bit bigger.

Talking Little, Tough, and Strong

Our little Bella is 11 month old and 3.9 lbs. She is healthy and strong. We have kept her safe, but not babied her in any way. She loves to walk and run. She will take 3/one mile walks a day. She uses stairs to get on our bed but jumps to the back of a love seat to get down. She seems to know if something is too high and will not jump down. We are careful to do the very best we can to care for her and keep her strong and healthy. We got her from a very reputable breeder and I think that makes a big difference. I would not want a Yorkie less than 3.5 lbs. beause they seem to be more fragile. Bella was definitely fragile when we got her at 7 months. Now she is entirely different. It is so nice not to worry about hypoglycemia any more.

I agree with other posters here the biggest issure with the little ones is their saftey and extra precautions that have to be made, My little girl just turned a year old and is sitting at 2 1/2lbs she is a great little dog but quite a bit more work than my boy. He is about 4 3/4 lbs and that extra weight makes all the difference, He is much more sturdy, but still very small IMO. I think that 4-6 lbs would be ideal weight for me. But if you have time and are willing to put in the extra energy the small ones can still make good pets too.

I've attached a copy of my bill. It has the high and low quote on it. I ended up paying 3,300 BUT on top of that I had to pay $75 X 2 for bandage changes, and had already paid for 2 seperate vet visits and xrays to be done at the emergency vet and my regular vet (plus pain meds), both of those vet bills were over $100. So in the end, I actually paid more than 3,500 for that broken elbow, but she's worth a MILLION to me
All I can say is OMG! But they are worth every penny

4 pounds is a pretty good size. My Ben is 4.5 and he is compact, and sturdy enough that I don't worry too much about him. I thought Rocky was going to be larger because he was the largest of my last litter but it looks like he may not make it to 4 pounds. He is such a daredevil monkey that he does worry me. He climbs everything! I have a 48" gate that has managed to keep everyone else secure, but not Rocky. He climbs that thing in seconds. I have found him walking around on our pool table and once he jumped off it before I could get to him! Sometimes I think it is more the demeanor and personality of the dog than the actual size that makes for danger. All small dogs are a bit fragile and need to be treated with respect. But the more they challenge the law of gravity, the more worry they are. Another factor is their bone structure. 4 pounds on a small frame is actually stronger than 4 pounds on a larger dog with thin bones. So, a compact 4 pounder should be tough enough to withstand normal circumstances.

If you have small children, you are the best judge if they are gentle enough to be around a small dog without endangering him. Other dogs are also a concern when you are looking at a very small breed. Again, you will be the best judge.

I think any small dog can be injured. You just learn to take a little more care with the tiny ones. I have never had one under 3 pounds (except the puppies) but I would imagine it is the same as when they are puppies. You just learn to be more careful and limit their perils. I am constantly changing things in my house now as Rocky finds new ways to put himself in harm's way. Moving a table too close to a chair, moving the chair that was too close to the pool table, keeping the bar stools safely tucked under the counter so he can't climb from the rung to the seat. It is funny the way he views our home as his gymnasium!

All 4 of my Yorkies are 4.5 lbs to 2.5lbs. I think all are sturdy and aren't fragile at all. They go on 3 mile walks with me everyday. They run, play and chase birds. They are free fed and I give them a treat a day. My two girls will jump on my dinning table if the chairs aren't pushed in. When they're playing chase they jump off the back of my sofa. They don't really jump off but rather drop off with all fours instead like most dogs front paws first. I worry about them at times but they've been doing this since they could first jump. I think they're bones are thick a whole lot thicker than my Chihuahuas that I used to raise. They are also very alert and aware of their surroundings. When they run they look like a bunch of rabbits. A lot of hopping. I don't think they are any different than my 25 lb. Pug. They are all so very spoiled!

gatsby is five pounds but seems very small hes the same height as a friends 2 pounder the vet says hes not fat but i cant imagine a smaller dog i am always worried at his size that something will be broken but he seems confident that he will be fine something i do though to discourage jumping is i put stares everywhere by the bed between the two couches(access to both) by the armchair even on a special chair close to the dineing room table so he can sit with us while we eat the only thing he dose is go up and down the stairs and i cant get him to stop that

Lucy is 2.5 lbs and she is a mess. She has fallen off the couch onto slate flooring, been stepped on and she's still going strong. She is a tough cookie!! I still watch her through. She has found she can fit through the slates on the stairs so the house has been baby proofed!!!! I have a bell on her b/c she gets into everything and if you have a pool be very careful, they can't reach the steps if they fall in. But let me tell you I would never trade her in for anything. Just know what you are preparing yourself for!!!
