This isn't just snobby Yorkie owners, it's also people w/BIG dogs...If I find out that one of my customers (I'm in sales) has a dog, I show them a picture of my Apple....Today, I had a husband/wife that had a great dane...I told them I'd previously had an English Mastiff, but now had a yorkie, and showed them Apple's picture, and they wouldn't even make a comment on her...Now ya'll can see she's cute, right lol...I could just see the disgust in their faces...I've had a 180 lb. dog, and a 5 lb. dog, and I loved the big one w/all my heart, as I love this little one w/all my heart...I wonder if they would love their big dog, if he was a little dog? They say size matters, but I think not ;) |
Me too I had to respond to this. Gracie is what I think of as a normal size -- 7 lbs. That's because our friends' Yorkies (that have had Yorkies for 30 years) have always been 6-7 lbs. When we decided we were ready to have one too, I wanted one that wasn't too fragile. I see breeders charging more the smaller they are and am turned off. They breed for small size to sell, but breed standard size for "show" (champion) lines. Some people I meet think she's big...compared to a neighbor's Yorkie that is groomed vey short (She is 9 lbs!)......some think she is small....Hey lady why are you walking a rat? I love Gracie and her size. She's small enough to pick up and carry whenever and wherever I need to, and large enough to walk 1-2 miles a day. Perfect! She's also the sweetest girl ever. I also love my neighbors' shih tzu, norwich terrier, beagle, etc. There is a perfect dog with the perfect size and personality for everyone. |
Some people They do not think before they speak!!! Always try to be above others!! That just pushes my buttons...think they know all and are full of it...you know what I mean?? |
We always get this too! Roxie is about 6lbs, Ryder is probably 10lbs, and now we have Prince who is 2 1/2lbs. Everyone always asks about Prince first, but Roxie and Ryder (not registered and could be mixes) have the best little personalities and win them over in minutes. |

I really, really wanted a standard Yorkie the second time around. It didn't happen, my vet says I am just destined to have big Yorkies. But that's ok by me, I loved Spencer just the way he was as do I love Winston...both well over the standard 7 pounds. They are both all Yorkie and I love every ounce of them. |
happens all the time to me as well. although usually I get the other way around and it's people who don't have yorkies who wonder how I got them to be so small! Mine range from 4-6 pounds. lol I think they're rather standard personally! But yes I have come into contact with many snobby YT owner who thinks their dogs are better than mine. Can't we all just get along? No one's is better than the other. haha Luckily, I don't get it at my groom shop. Customers are always super sweet and just ooh and ahh at my guys rather than be snooty about it. Or maybe they figure they better me nice since I may be giving their dog a haircut. haha |
this makes me crazy too! my mom's yorkie Livy is 10 lbs...its perfect because she LOVES to be outside (they live in the coutry) and she keeps up with my dad's hunting dogs! My yorkie is 3ish pounds. I was hoping for around 5 but he has stayed smaller. I also have gotten the "hey did you know you are walking rat?" How freakin rude!!! I also get the "oh look a teacup" I have stopped correcting people I just smile. I also make sure if someone is rude and then they want to pet him, I say "oh no he bites" :D I say pay no attention to these people, life is too short to listen to stupidity...walk away |
The only time Ive encountered that was one time when we were at a festival and some lady said "they have the bigger kind of yorkies". They are 6 and 11 lbs |
I agree that is really ignorant of people. Who can judge a poor little yorkie on their beautiful looks! |
This happened to me recently at my vets office by the vet tech. When she sees my 2.9 lb 5 month old puppy ,she says sarcastically oh my mom has one thats full grown smaller than him ,mind you he is charting to be about 3.8lbs full grown. |
It is surprising how much I hear this, too. We seem to be looking for a good comeback answer for these ignorant people. - A teacup is a clothing size for dogs, not a breed size. - My dog is huge-YOU WIN!!! - My breeder strives for good health and personality. From which breeder did you purchase your yorkie? (If they answer "petstore" say, "Oh, not a puppymill"!!!!) - You must have paid a lot for such a tiny dog! How much did they take you for? - Are you planning to show your yorkie or is it just for show? - I thought a smaller yorkie would make me look fat! It is fun to imagine what you would like to say, isn't it? Probably the best thing to do is just realize they are ignorant and either - Just smile, or - Tell them to join YorkieTalk to meet some very friendly yorkie owners and learn everything there is to know about the breed. |

I get it constantly. Lucy weights 13 lbs, Rebel weighs 5.5. When they're together people think Lucy is the Mama and Reb is the baby. NOT! I don't let it bother me anymore. I'm nice to the people who are nice, and rude to those who are rude. |
