Snobby Yorkie Mommies Is it just me, or do you feel that you are looked down on because of your Yorkie's size? It seems that everytime I meet somebody with a Yorkie(s) the first thing they ask is "how much does she weigh?" When I tell them, they say oh, she's big and then they say their YT is only 2 lbs. or 3 lbs. or whatever. This happened to me recently in my doctor's office, the receptionist had a picture (it looked like a professional portrait) of her two Yorkies on the counter and when I commented on how beautiful they were and asked how old hers are and told her about mine, the whole tone of her voice changed and it was like, oh you poor thing. I couldn't believe it, but it's happened since then in a more civilized fashion. Am I just paranoid or does this happen to anyone else? |
It happens all the time. As someone that has them in every size, I understand what you are talking about. Jesse is 3.5 and Travis is 15 lbs. The others are all between these two but I think really it's the people that have that tone who are really the most ignorant. They must not know the breed history and how they were originally 14-17 lbs or larger then bred down until to be shown the AKC says 3 to 7 lbs. Now there are some breeders that will breed a female larger because they will usually produce more puppies and it will continue to propagate the larger yorkies we have. I hear people say the larger ones are "throw backs" and I cringe. I like to think of the bigger ones as the Washington or Lincoln's of the breed and have pride to be able to see from where our breed has come. |
Oh don't feel bad some people prefer yorkies larger.I have all different sized yorkies and usually my big boy Tuffy at a whopping 15 pounds gets the most attention wherever we go.Not only is he handsome he's also so friendly and he loves kids.People often ask me where they can get a yorkie that size and if I breed him I don't but he's the greatest.Don't listen to anybody telling you that your baby is anything but perfect everybody thinks their dog is better than everybody elses. We have to prejudice:D |
Yes, it happens all the time...even with my 5 lb girl. To me it just shows how little knowledge they have regarding the breed and I find it quite funny that they are really just flaunting their ignorance and don't even know it! |

I can't imagine somebody treating them any differently!!! I love all yorkies, no matter their size!!! :D |
I get it all the time with Uni who is all of 5 pounds. I once had a brother and sister come into my store. The brother goes "Hey look a yorkie, it's a big one!" Then the sis goes "Oh yeah, mine's waaaaay smaller than that!" I asked how much does she weigh, and she goes "Oh like a pound or two pounds at the most". I stopped talking after that point bc I knew these two were absolutely idiotic and there would be no way of educating them. Oh this was also when Uni was still a puppy. Most people that talk down to you and your yorkie due to its size are usually very ignorant and misinformed people. They are most likely also "rich" people that paid over $2000 for a pet store pup. They feel the smaller the dog, the more it shows how much they paid, but in actuality we know what it really means. :p |
Peanut ranges about 3.5-4.5 The last 2 times he went to the vet he was 4.5 :D I love his size. I love him to death even if he grew to be 10 I would love him the same. When I first got him I didnt even ask the lady what size he would be LoL I saw him and instantly I feel in love with him. Sometimes people will comment on his "legs" he has really long legs lol They say "what type of dog is he" "oh look at the chui" Whatever. I dont care I love my dog more than anything, and all the comment really dont get to me anymore, half the time I ignore them lol |
It drives me crazy when people do this. Not only do I have my own four Yorkies ranging from 9lbs to 3.5 lbs, I do Yorkie rescue. I can't tell you how many Yorkies have come into our rescue because they got "to big". I actually had a woman look at my 9 lbs Prada and say to me "Oh, she must be mixed with something because she's so big". UGH!!!!!! |
How rude, to be more obsessed with a dogs size than the dog itself. I won't deny that I love small dogs, but by no means will I belittle a dog in a specific breed for being "too big". Gordon is 10 lbs and as lovable as can be. People like that would probably sell of their Yorkie for gaining a pound too many. Honestly though, if someone did that to me, I'd just roll my eyes and say "So that means my dog could beat up your dog, right?" :p (I'd be joking, of course. I just wouldn't tell them that.) |

Had this happen to me today in Petco too... lady selling "Blue" pet foods. Incredibly she also remarked how her best friend raises "teacup" Yorkies & this was how she knew so much about them. I promptly informed her there's no such thing. *gigglin* Poor thing turned beat red & went to search for someone else to sell her products to. |
Oh Gosh, this happens to my husband and I all the time. We have an 8 pounds yorkie male 10 months old and his half sister that is 5 1/2 months old and 2 pounds. Well our little girl gets all the attention wherever we go and no one says anything about my boy. This just ticks me off:mad: My boy is the cutest yorkie ever and we love him dearly, but we always get asked where did we get the girl at. We both smile and say they have the same daddy and then thier like shocked. He isn't that big at all but by their actions are like he was enormous:eek::mad: |
I get it a lot. Not necessarily people trying to be rude but sometimes it comes across as very rude. Jackson is 12.5lbs. Just today in Petsmart, one of the trainers came up and would not leave me alone first off, then she was commenting on his color because his back is silverish and she told me Yorkies aren't supposed to have that silver color and how big he was... whatever! LOL. I get told all the time that he's not a Yorkie but a Silky. At the dog park someone was like "Is he like a gigantic yorkie?" ha which he is haha but the way people say it sometimes is rude. Especially since he's not gigantic by any means. Yeah, he's a lot bigger than most Yorkies but I prefer his size. |
People ask me about Sophie all the time, too. She's 6 months and weighs 5 lbs. Some are like, She's big, and some think she's tiny. It seems around here many people have the so-called teacup yorkies and they think that's the norm. So I just take the time to politely educate them. It's my nature, I'm a teacher!!:p One couple I know that has a Yorkie that they bought that weighs abut 10 lbs and they say she's a few lbs bigger than normal. They are the only people I know that have had Yorkies for a long time and know the breed. Everyone else seems clueless. Thank goodness for YT where there are normal Yorkie owners!!! LOL:cool: |
I purposely sought out what I consider a full size Yorkie - The "teacups" are cute and I have nothing against them or their owners... but they are just not for me. My last Yorkie was 10 pounds -and people constantly questioned whether he could be full-blooded or not - and certainly not AKC certified!!! Well, who cares? And yes, I don't get people snubbing their noses at a larger Yorkie... for many reasons. |
JoJo is 8 lbs and has long legs, which people tend to comment on often because they're so used to seeing tiny yorkies with short legs, but I love him exactly as he is! I used to think before I got him that I wanted a tiny yorkie, but now I prefer the larger size. He's still small enough to carry and put in my purse, but big enough that I don't have to worry about him breaking his leg jumping off the couch, or constantly needing me to lift him up because he can't get on the furniture or the bed with me. :) He is just perfect in every way. :D |
I have met with snobby as well. My Rico is 12.5lbs and my Benjamin is 12lbs. I always follow up their disdain with the tale of my first yorkie 20 years ago that was small and was sickly. That is why I wanted a pure pet quality companion. I know that there are many small yorkies that are very healthy but what I went through was pure ugly and painful. My Benjamin's line all lived an average of 17-18years (back to great great grandma). However, the most snobby of all was on a trip to Petsmart. Ben noticed a cute little girl in the basket next to us. They really liked each other and I made the mistake of asking if she was part yorkie. She was very snotty and told me "NO, she is a very RARE norwich terrier, don't you know how much they cost?" Well, next thing I know they start getting flirty. He gave a flirty woof and she gave a cute little ruff. Her mommy grabbed her and scolded her, walking out of the store. Everyone in the store nearby was laughing.:D |
I have small Yorkies and I'm not snobby at all!:D I get excited when I see big and small Yorkies. It's nice seeing the different sizes. They are each unique. It's like anyone can get a Yorkie. I mean to fit their personality and space. Indoor apt. or condo types get the small ones. Outdoor types seem to get larger ones. I'm an outdoors type mine go trail walking, fishing, swimming you name it. IMO. |
I must admit that I was guilty of falling into the teacup fad. I thought I brought myself a teacup and was not. At first I was disappointed, but once Hugo came into my life, I was hard pressed not to love him. He weighs about 5 lbs. and I must say that the biggest snobs are the Petco customers in Manhattan (union square) who want to compare how wonderful their dogs whom are so much smaller than mine are, as if I care. I do not know about other small breeds, but I think that this is the only breed where size is compared. If Hugo grew to be 15 lbs I would love him nonetheless. I had no idea that the "How much does he weigh?" would be a constant conversation with everyone who meets Hugo. It is as if he should wear a "I weigh 5 lbs and I am adorable" sign on his sweater to shun those busy bodies. When I meet a Yorkie owner all I care about is if they are happy and if the Yorkie is healthy. Big dogs we are conditioned to ask "Does he bite?" with Yorkies, somewhere people have been conditioned to ask, "How much does he weigh?" I find it hilarious. I must say that after having Hugo in my life, I will always have a Yorkie. |
This actually happened to me three days ago. I was walking Da Vinci outside and I bumped into an older gentleman that had a 2 lbs yorkie. He tried to tell me mine was too big and that it was mixed with something else. He's only 5 lbs... |

Honestly I LOVE educating studid people that like to tell me how a larger cannot be pure... let's talk history. |
I think it happens both ways. When I had Suri she was 2 pounds and people always said how their yorkie was smaller... And how Suri was big... At 2 pounds. I even run into people that thought she was a sick throw back of a dog... But she was never sick and as healthy as a horse. Now with the three... They range from 2 3/4 and 5 pounds and people think Lace is big. I guess it's a toss up and it is usually ignorant people either way. |

Like those who start the threads on here, "How big is your yorkie" mine is only 2 pounds, blah blah blah.......... like that makes them superior. |

Answer "no there is no such thing as a teacup". Response. "Oh yes my sisters boyfriends mother has one and it's a teacup. she paid $**** for it and they guaranteed her that it is a teacup". and hers looks just like yours so yours must be a teacup. OK. Or perhaps hers is NOT a teacup. |

I don't think it matters WHAT size your yorkie is, you are going to get that comment. Tucker is 4 pounds and and it seems that almost everyone I run into has a yorkie at home that looks just like Tucker, but a little smaller. Sadly, yorkie size has turned into a competition. |
Sadly, this same thing has happened to me with my Chi. Everyone always says," Oh, we have one too, but ours is smaller." Ughhh!!!! It gets so frustrating. Or people are asking how much she weighs. Next time someone asks me that, I'm going to say that it's not polite to ask a lady her weight. :) |
