People ask me about Sophie all the time, too. She's 6 months and weighs 5 lbs. Some are like, She's big, and some think she's tiny. It seems around here many people have the so-called teacup yorkies and they think that's the norm. So I just take the time to politely educate them. It's my nature, I'm a teacher!!:p One couple I know that has a Yorkie that they bought that weighs abut 10 lbs and they say she's a few lbs bigger than normal. They are the only people I know that have had Yorkies for a long time and know the breed. Everyone else seems clueless. Thank goodness for YT where there are normal Yorkie owners!!! LOL:cool:

I purposely sought out what I consider a full size Yorkie - The "teacups" are cute and I have nothing against them or their owners... but they are just not for me.

My last Yorkie was 10 pounds -and people constantly questioned whether he could be full-blooded or not - and certainly not AKC certified!!! Well, who cares?

And yes, I don't get people snubbing their noses at a larger Yorkie... for many reasons.

JoJo is 8 lbs and has long legs, which people tend to comment on often because they're so used to seeing tiny yorkies with short legs, but I love him exactly as he is! I used to think before I got him that I wanted a tiny yorkie, but now I prefer the larger size. He's still small enough to carry and put in my purse, but big enough that I don't have to worry about him breaking his leg jumping off the couch, or constantly needing me to lift him up because he can't get on the furniture or the bed with me. :) He is just perfect in every way. :D

I have met with snobby as well. My Rico is 12.5lbs and my Benjamin is 12lbs. I always follow up their disdain with the tale of my first yorkie 20 years ago that was small and was sickly. That is why I wanted a pure pet quality companion. I know that there are many small yorkies that are very healthy but what I went through was pure ugly and painful. My Benjamin's line all lived an average of 17-18years (back to great great grandma).

However, the most snobby of all was on a trip to Petsmart. Ben noticed a cute little girl in the basket next to us. They really liked each other and I made the mistake of asking if she was part yorkie. She was very snotty and told me "NO, she is a very RARE norwich terrier, don't you know how much they cost?" Well, next thing I know they start getting flirty. He gave a flirty woof and she gave a cute little ruff. Her mommy grabbed her and scolded her, walking out of the store. Everyone in the store nearby was laughing.:D

I have small Yorkies and I'm not snobby at all!:D I get excited when I see big and small Yorkies. It's nice seeing the different sizes. They are each unique. It's like anyone can get a Yorkie. I mean to fit their personality and space. Indoor apt. or condo types get the small ones. Outdoor types seem to get larger ones. I'm an outdoors type mine go trail walking, fishing, swimming you name it. IMO.

I must admit that I was guilty of falling into the teacup fad. I thought I brought myself a teacup and was not. At first I was disappointed, but once Hugo came into my life, I was hard pressed not to love him. He weighs about 5 lbs. and I must say that the biggest snobs are the Petco customers in Manhattan (union square) who want to compare how wonderful their dogs whom are so much smaller than mine are, as if I care. I do not know about other small breeds, but I think that this is the only breed where size is compared. If Hugo grew to be 15 lbs I would love him nonetheless. I had no idea that the "How much does he weigh?" would be a constant conversation with everyone who meets Hugo. It is as if he should wear a "I weigh 5 lbs and I am adorable" sign on his sweater to shun those busy bodies. When I meet a Yorkie owner all I care about is if they are happy and if the Yorkie is healthy. Big dogs we are conditioned to ask "Does he bite?" with Yorkies, somewhere people have been conditioned to ask, "How much does he weigh?" I find it hilarious. I must say that after having Hugo in my life, I will always have a Yorkie.

This actually happened to me three days ago. I was walking Da Vinci outside and I bumped into an older gentleman that had a 2 lbs yorkie. He tried to tell me mine was too big and that it was mixed with something else. He's only 5 lbs...

Honestly I LOVE educating studid people that like to tell me how a larger cannot be pure... let's talk history.

I think it happens both ways. When I had Suri she was 2 pounds and people always said how their yorkie was smaller... And how Suri was big... At 2 pounds. I even run into people that thought she was a sick throw back of a dog... But she was never sick and as healthy as a horse.

Now with the three... They range from 2 3/4 and 5 pounds and people think Lace is big. I guess it's a toss up and it is usually ignorant people either way.

The others are all between these two but I think really it's the people that have that tone who are really the most ignorant. They must not know the breed history and how they were originally 14-17 lbs or larger then bred down until to be shown the AKC says 3 to 7 lbs. Now there are some breeders that will breed a female larger because they will usually produce more puppies and it will continue to propagate the larger yorkies we have. I hear people say the larger ones are "throw backs" and I cringe. I like to think of the bigger ones as the Washington or Lincoln's of the breed and have pride to be able to see from where our breed has come.

I agree, those comments seem to come from ignorant people. People who have paid a fortune for their tiny one because it is a "teacup", people who have no clue that the standard goes up to and includes 7 pounds.

Like those who start the threads on here, "How big is your yorkie" mine is only 2 pounds, blah blah blah.......... like that makes them superior.

then there are those who will ask "do you breed teacups"

Answer
"no there is no such thing as a teacup".

Response.
"Oh yes my sisters boyfriends mother has one and it's a teacup. she paid $**** for it and they guaranteed her that it is a teacup". and hers looks just like yours so yours must be a teacup.

OK. Or perhaps hers is NOT a teacup.

It reminds me of new mothers comparing "what can your baby do, mine is 6 months old and knows the entire alphabet....... backwards".

I don't think it matters WHAT size your yorkie is, you are going to get that comment. Tucker is 4 pounds and and it seems that almost everyone I run into has a yorkie at home that looks just like Tucker, but a little smaller. Sadly, yorkie size has turned into a competition.

GAOMariposa 10-24-2009 04:32 PM

Sadly, this same thing has happened to me with my Chi. Everyone always says," Oh, we have one too, but ours is smaller." Ughhh!!!! It gets so frustrating. Or people are asking how much she weighs. Next time someone asks me that, I'm going to say that it's not polite to ask a lady her weight. :)
