Coyotes in my neighborhood 'area'

Yesterday when I was driving home I saw a coyote crossing the street on the main road into my neighborhood. It was coming from what's left of a ranch that wraps around our development. There are a few cows and calves out there. We live near a creek too and there's tons of feral cats out there. It really gave me the creeps though.

I live in Austin, Texas. We have our share of wild life but I'd only heard stories about coyotes, never seen one around here before.

Please dont be mad at the coyotes, they have nowhere to go. Their homes are being destroyed by man for $$$ Just understand and take very care of yours.

we have coyotes in our neighborhood as well as owls and hawks. I have a 12 x 12 covered pen that is right off of my living room with a dog door access. I feel preety good about them going outside into the pen at night. They also use pee pads. A couple of months ago I was outside with a larger yorkie and as I was opening the door to come in I felt something hit the back of my head. I looked up and saw a hawk flying towards the tree. That hawk was trying to get my baby with me standing right there next to him. I think what safed him was the fact that we were close to the house and the hawk felt a little trapped. I was so shocked. Now they just use the pen.

Just a few days ago I let Reesie out to play and I put him on a tie out. I stood at the door to watch him until my son got out there with him. They were both out there playing and I came back to the door to say something 2 seconds after my son got out there. I looked up and this hawk was circling above their heads. I mean, I could have thrown a rock at it, it was that close. I started yelling for my son to get Reesie in the house, and I think that is what scared the hawk away. I think the fact that they were under some trees also helped, but I was super scared, I will tell you that!!!

i live south of denver colorado I see coyotes all the time i hear than at night. I don't walk my dogs on the path and at night i have them on a lease. they scary me.

We have lots of coyotes in my area ,I hear them howling at night .I dont let the dogs out late at night, they use the pee pads in the spare bedroom.

On ocassion I will see a coyote out during the middle of the day. Just last year I heard of one that tried to attack a toddler that was walking on our horse trail with her mom. I also know of someone that was wallking her 4 lb yorkie on a leash and I am not sure if it was a coyote or a large dog but whatever it was it snapped the leash and carried off her dog. It happened so fast that they were not able to save her baby. I am so leary of walking my litttle ones that I will put them in a stroller or I walk them a little distance then I pick them up. I just get so nervous.

You should always be cautious of whatever animals are prevalent in your area. Here in AZ we have coyotes, javelina and mountain lions. Not to mention the snakes, scorpions and colorado river toads! I hate to be out in the dark! Let alone let Zeus go out by himself.

I know a lady who coincidentally also had a Yorkie named Zeus, and a coyote jumped a 6 ft wall to get the dog in the backyard and took him over the wall while her husband stood nearby stunned. This was in Lake Tahoe a few years back. If they see a potential meal they will do what they have to to eat and survive.

We live on 27 acres in North Georgia. We have coyotes and red tail hawks. The hawks are protected by the government and I totally understand that, but KB would be a tasty little treat for those gigantic birds of prey. I really have to keep a close eye on her when we are outside.

I am always outside with mine. I never leave them unattended. Its like leaving a 2 year old outside by themselves.

I totally, totally agree. My beloved Zeus was a rescue dog at 5 months old; he had been tied outside by himself for 8+ hours each day. It is like leaving a small child out alone.

Can you imagine all the things that might have happened? A Yorkie could become prey to so many of the animals we have been discussing, or even be stolen by someone who thinks he's cute. Can you imagine your furbaby out in the cold, the rain, the heat all alone, so little and scared?

I jumped on this owner (a relative, sad to say) and insisted she send the dog to me. (It also had a broken arm from being dropped by her children.) She just had no concept of what it takes to give to a dog, just was concerned with how adorable he was to others. She actually wanted to keep him a few more months (until the 'puppy' wore off) but I was afraid he'd be dead by then. Thank goodness she agreed....

(Oh, and he was given to her as a gift. A whole other fun topic!)

But, I digress (sorry). I am just so proud to be a member of YorkieTalk, where the owners really care about their dogs so much they have thought through and maintained the commitment involved.....this includes protection of our babies in a way that larger breed owners don't really need to consider.

Do I sound like a stage mom? An OCD Martha Stewart? I just feel so strongly that protection and supervision should be listed on the 'license' to own this breed!

Here in the desert (Mojave) we have had at least one coyote attack one of the Greyhounds. (the tri-pod). She was tore up bad. Had the rest of the pack not been out she would have been dead. She almost died as it was.

We have 2.5 acres fully fenced into sections. The hounds have about 1 acre for them. They coyotes come under the fencing. It is so scary.

Just recently I think we had a bobcat or maybe an owl get the tiny poodle I have. The vet did not think he would make it. After 2 days of carrying him around in a "snuggy" against my chest...he is fine!!

They say the the coyote can jump 6 ft or more if hungry. Watch the pups.

Lordy, those stories scare me.
I'm not angry at the coyotes, I know why they are coming out, this area has been clearing away their homes. It's sad to watch how fast my nook away from the city has turned into a mini city of it's own. We see tons of deer and hear the coyotes, etc. I just didn't expect to see one that early in the afternoon and it made it all real to me.

Someone let out some wild Asian cat into the park near us, I cannot remember the name I'll have to ask hubby, but it's as big as a dog! It was only a rumor for awhile until hubby saw it while running the trail and his aunt and friend saw it one weekend while they were doing the trail. I haven't heard of it attacking anyone's pet or even coming out of the creek area, it has plenty of rabbits and squirrels to hunt.

That's a whole other bucket of mess, getting an animal from other countries because they are 'cute' and then releasing them when they get too big

I am just reading this and had to comment. I live in rural WV on a farm. I live in fear of these animals everyday! I have 2 17lb schnauzers and a 2lb yorkie. Back in the spring one of our cows gave birth. My dad watched that little calf very closely, but at night a coyote got it and all we found was its head!! The same week my Ella ( mini schnauzer) was bitten by a poisonous snake. She was ok after a vet visit but the next week I came home from a family visit where I was only gone for about an hour and she was covered in blood. We think a coyote attacked her right in our yard! She survived that too but has a lot of scars. I think they could eat Fiona (yorkie) in one gulp!! I have 2 year old and 6 year old that I have to worry about also. It is illegal to kill them here, but something really needs to be done. We also had a kitten we were letting out a few time a day on our back porch that disappeared. Maybe coyotes. Last week my husband saw one walk around the toys in our backyard! That is way to close for me. This things seem to be unafraid. We rarely saw one until a few years ago. The population is growing too fast and I know they are losing their homes but I want to keep mine safe too! I don't want to play survival of the fittest with them. They would win! Good luck and keep your babies really close. Coyotes are fast!!

If we had that problem that bad here, I'm sure my husband would be in jail because he would be removing them from the premises. I can keep my animals in but kids have to go out and play and that just wouldn't happen! OMG that's scary
