8 month old yorkie just went into heat

I need some advice. I have a male and female yorkie who will be 8 months old the first part of October. My vet told me that yorkies develop very slowly and I wouldn't have to think about spaying or neutering them until they were between 8 and 9 months old. Well, I just noticed that Bella is a bit swollen and seems to be bleeding (this is her first heat). This has been going on for about 3 days now. My male yorkie, Rusty, doesn't seem to be showing any interest in her for which I am glad.

My problem is that we are in the process of moving out of state and will be leaving on October 26th. We are moving from California to Florida and I don't want to get them fixed now and then have to travel with them when they are recuperating. It is too difficult for me to separate them as they are half brother and half sister. They had the same father but different mothers. It is not my intention to breed them and was wondering if I can make the trip and then have them fixed after we settle in. I just don't want her to become pregnant as I have heard a lot of horror stories about yorkie pregnancies. How often do they come into heat and how long does it last?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My Rhianna went into her first heat at 8 1/2 months old and her second heat four months later (that is usually not the norm, but my vet said it was possible) usually there is at least 6 months between heat cycles. The normal heat cycle is 3 weeks. Your male is not interested right now, but will be very soon! Usually around her 9th or 10th day of her cycle your male is going to go nuts! My advice would be to completely seperate them as you do not want any accidents and she is way too young to have a litter safely. I would suggest having your male fixed immediately and after your female is finished with her heat you can set her up for her spay. In the meantime, I would strongly suggest either completely seperating them in different rooms or having one of them go to a relative's house.

If I were you I would take the male and have him neutered ASAP! If she is in heat it is only a matter of time before he gets nutty and you will not be able to keep them apart~~~~guaranteed The neuter for a male is very minimal and he will recover very quickly. If you are in the middle of a move the last thing you need to be doing is keeping tabs on your pups trying to keep them separated~that is when a real accident will happen. Ii I were you I would call in the morning and see if you can make an appointment to take him in early next week.

I agree with get your male neutered now.
You do NOT want an accidental breeding between ½ siblings.
It can produce very bad genetic problems.

If you are not moving until the end of October, your male will have plenty of recuperation time. They normally bounce right back to their normal selves in a very short period of time.

But their sperm is still active for about two weeks after they are neutered...so keep an eye on him....good luck.

My vet also suggested I wait on Paisley until 8-9 months. I waited until just over 8 months and called to set up her appointment. UNFORTUNATELY she went into heat before her appt. at 8 1/2 months. Called the vet and they pushed it back to Sept. 28th, unfortunately my dad went into the hospital last week, so I had to reschedule as I knew he was getting pacemaker surgery, and I would need to be available whatever day they set it for this week, and her appt. was supposed to be Monday. Dad had his pacemaker today, and everything went well, and Paisley is now scheduled for Oct. 13th for her surgery.
Let me tell you, I have had two other female dogs in my life, My Sadie who we had pts in Jan and Bailey (my basset who is currently 4 yo). Both were adopted through the Humane Society so were fixed when they came to us. I have two male dogs right now Jefe 10 yo and Preston 2 yo. I had both of them fixed when they were 8 months. I have never had a female that was in heat, and NEVER want to experience it again. It made me a NERVOUS wreck that she would somehow get pregnant. It was messy, she pouted all the time, and was grumpy about her food.
I do not know how breeders do it!. LOL
