| is that true that a tiny only live a short lifespan? hi, i found a research said tat, a tiny dog (4lbs n below) live a very short lifespan ( 0-7years) is that true? i have a 3lbs yorkie n feel so sad to know about this!! and it also said that a tiny cannot be spayed because they cannot handle the anesthetic well..is that true as well? if they only live a max 7 years, then whats the point on spaying them? (normally all the cancers and pyometra will only occur when they reach 8-10 years)

| I had 2 dogs that had pyometra @ the age of 6 months. One was a Great Dane and the other a German Shepherd. I know that you have to be very careful with anesthesia on little ones usually under 2 pounds. If your dog is in good health it should be fine to put under. Check with you're vet. As far as not having as long a lifespan as a larger Yorkie I would check with your vet. And the reason to spay is if your 3 pounder were to get pregnant you could possibly lose her and the puppies! That would be tragic...

| I don't know for sure how old they can get, but I do know that the small ones need very careful handling. I would check before doing anything with a good vet that specialize in small breeds. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | I don't know but . . . I have never heard anything like that. Lola is 2.15 lbs and was spayed two weeks ago. She vomited the night she was spayed because of the anesthesia however I don't think it was because of her weight. She recovered fine and didn't have any other problems.

| Not true unless a medical problem stunted their growth and the underlying problem hasn't been fixed OR they have an accident and they are hard to avoid when they are that small. Usually 3 pound dogs can do very well getting spayed as long as the right protocol is followed.

YT 500 Club Member | My Hope who was only 3.5bl lived to be 12 years old bar 2 weeks. She survived, surgery to pin her leg folled by amputation. Numerous tooth scalings, spaying due to pyometra amongst many. Her sizing was natural though, not deliberatly bred for as both her parents were in the 6lb range. She was a fiesty oppinionated little madam who could twist everone around her paw, even my sister who swore she didn't like little dogs. |

| Not neccessarily. It's often the case though because generally, when a breeder is focusing on size and purposely trying to produce small dogs, they tend to let the overall health of the animal take a backseat. Therefor, many extremely small dogs are very ill bred and riddled with health issues. However, tiny little ones can simply be runts and smaller, but with no health issues at all. In either case, they smaller the dog, the more prone they are to injury, so you do have to be extremely careful. |

| Can you post the website? Generally, small bred dogs live longer than large breed dogs so I would be interested in seeing this site.

| Cin- I think by smaller dogs she meant the extremely tiny Yorkies, not small breeds in general. But I could have misunderstood her... |

Since you know I have little Bella (all of 3#'s) and Moose (all of 4#) I am very interested in this research. It could be that tinies have more accidents but I have never seen they only live 7 years. So just interested..
