Why do you consider it an extra burden if the dogs are registered through AKC...This is one of their requirements and should not be considered a burden. AKC made big bucks ($64/8 million last year) and can afford to do inspections.

Very interesting website...and I would change your last statement to read "multibillion" dollar industry. Tons of people making $$$$ off of the dogs.

I agree with Rachel it's not the registry that matters so much as who and where you get the pup from.
They had a puppymill bust in my area and the pups there were all akc registered..

I don't think they inspect ever breeder's facilities every year, and why should the government quit checking just because someone is registered with the AKC? You would probably decide frequency of inspection based on some criteria such as number of litters and past marks. Since the AKC can't regulate kennel conditions any more than state law allows, it would seems certain kennels would need more frequent inspections than others, and this in my opinion puts an unfair burden on them. I'm always reading how much they take in, but how much do they spend, that's the real question, and maybe they need to take in more, so that they can afford to do yearly inspections.

It's easy to criticize any multimillion dollar company, of course there are things wrong with the AKC, that why I always encourage pet owners to register with them and become involved. Pet owners should have a a voice in breeding legislation, and what the AKC decides to back, because right now much of it doesn't seem to protect the small breeder, but the commercial breeder. Also, pet owners would have more clout to get the AKC to do more frequent inspections. While it may not be perfect, it's the best thing we have going, just saying that it's lousy too, leaves the other registries with much more power, after all, do you think APRI does any inspections? Do they ever suspend any breeders? If you have an suggestions on how we can help fix what is wrong with the AKC, I'd love to hear about it.

We have Petland right up the road from me. Sadly, that is where my Maddy is from. I had no clue about puppy mills. I saw a cute pup and got attached. If I could go back, knowing the information I know now, would I get her? That's impossible to say. But I would never KNOWINGLY support the monsters that hurt helpless animals for monetary gain. To the OP, I am glad that you changed your mind about APRI. :)

This to me is like saying just because the AKC has some poor breeders, I should go to another registry that accepts any breeder, and breeders who are so bad that the AKC has banned them.

The AKC also formed it's own High Volume Breeders Committee which is a way for them to recruit and work with commercial breeders. They rely heavily on mass produced pups for income, they don't wan to lose the registries from all those litters.....I've also found articles that stated the AKC is also a platinum member of the Missouri Pet Breeders, which are puppymill breeders......

As for the OP, you are right. There are some on this forum who want to pound their opinions into your head, instead of just explaining the true facts to you. Hang in there. There are a lot of good informative sources here. It is just like harvest time. You have to weed out the chaff from the wheat.

I TOTALLY agree with this! We rescued Camden from a terrible situation and she is AKC registered! I think everyone should research where they buy their puppies from, get referrals, do their homework, etc....
I would certainly stay away from certain registries, but since inspections aren't done as often as we might like, everyone should educate themselves on who and where they are buying their puppies!!

You are no different from so so many members on here who learned what petshops and puppymills were after thier purchase. Just do like many of us do STAY OUT of the puppy store, don't even go in to look because your heart will be broken. :thumbdown Look at the puppies here on YT and if and when you decide to ever buy another you will know they are not from a mill :) All of this comes from knowledge and we all learn a little every day.
