For those who have really cold winter, I have a question..

Hey, I'm in Duluth, Minnesota and Winter here is not 50 below, but we can get 50 below wind chills quite often. Mazie, my English Cocker, always goes outside to go potty and rushes her little but back in quite quickly when it is that cold. Misty, my Yorkie is only 5 lbs and if the temp is below zero, I don't let her out, otherwise she loves going out and playing in the snow. I keep a close eye on her because I don't want her to get too cold. She apparently knows when to come in cause she'll come running to the door after about 5 minutes. I do not take them for walks because even if the temp is above zero, walking on the snow for any length of time can hurt their paws. But we do enjoy our winters as we look out the window!

I have a 1 acre lot with 3/4 of it fenced in. My babies mainly potty outside and do so even in the winter (granted I am in NC so we have true seasons) I also do the piddle pads for when it rains, snows, or ices... I like the fact they are trained on both for their comfort. As far as walks, I do not walk mine... I let them play in the fenced in area a little as I watch from the sunroom. I surely would not walk mine in the bitter cold!

Honey, you just plain need to move... like way south! lol! I wouldn't take myself on a walk in that kind of weather, let alone my Roxy or even a big dog if I had one. We have days in Michigan I would never venture out in that aren't near that cold. I don't know how you do it. I'm keeping pee pads going for Roxy just for those kinds of days. We can play fetch in the house.

this past winter we only had Joey this past winter (Tank didn't bless us with his appearance until March), but he absolutely loves snow! I have a cute little sweater for him, which he isn't a fan of. He would go out, romp around in the snow, do his thing, then we would go inside and cuddle in a blanket together to warm up. He had so much fun he didn't even seem to notice the cold. I live in Idaho, and it was most certainly not -50, or even close. I would agree with the pee pad thing, though Joey and Tank aren't trained to use those. I have been considering getting them a litterbox or some pee pads and trying to train them, since when my hubby and I both work, they have to go into the bathroom for a while...it's not fair to them to try to make them hold it that long. While I'm on here, has anyone had luck pee pad training 10 month old and 15 month old yorkies?

I live in cold winters also in northern michigan on great lakes
and I will not be taking my baby outside at all during the harsh
winters! I understand you about your concern walking your baby.
I agree with one of the post here about training our yorkies inside as well as outside. You will be okay!

We just play lots inside- no walks here! The snow and weather does get cold but we just play with them and keep them busy- they do were sweaters and coats in the winter though too!

Yorkies do not have an undercoat and cannot maintain their body temperature in cold weather.

I'm in Iceland, it doesnt get lower than about -20°C here
Last winter he had so much coat that i didnt have to put him in clothes, but his coat is litle now (summerhaircut still) and i will have to dress him well up for walks.
Fido LOVES the snow! He can go for hours outside playing in snow as long as he's well dressed!
We will not stop going for walks

i think double training for both outside and pee pads is a good investment...can you retrain to use a pee pad in your kitchen, bathroom, or garage area??? or you can scoop some of the snow off the ground in a little pen area for pottying outside...i wouldn't walk the dog i'd go to an indoor dog park or play really vigourously inside the house...if you must go out at all i'd put on a full length long john outfit and a heavy winter coat over it...

I've noticed you're from Liberty. I am from Liberty also....Texas that is and our winters are nothing here. I'm located close to the Gulf so we don't get winters that are too cold....just hurricanes Haha. Teddy does own one sweater though that he wears like maybe a month out of our entire winter haha. But good luck with yalls winter!! Keep your babies warm!! Maybe try a snuggie for dogs!!
