Default Traveling with Yorkie - Please help!

We're driving 2 hours away to a golf resort for 1 night. The hotel is dog-friendly so we're able to take our puppy (8 months old).

We have several choices:
1. Take our dog with us. We can either keep him in the hotel room while we golf (5+hours) or take him on the golf cart.
2. We can leave him at home and try to find someone to stop by during the day to change his peepads and give him food.

We're not sure what to do. If we take him with us, and leave him in the hotel, we're afraid that he will be scared in a strange place alone because we'll have to leave him for several hours alone while we golf.

If we take him golfing with us, we're afraid he'll get heat-sick or something.

If we leave him at home, we're concerned because we've never left him alone overnight or with anyone else before. Not sure if he'll be barky at the stranger or not.

What have you done with your yorkies when you travel? Oh and we don't want to board him b/c we had bad experience before.

Thanks!

Personally, I would line up someone close by who I trust to come by a couple of times and play with him, take him out, feed him, etc. Or if you have someone who would let him spend the night with them, that would even be better. Another option, if the hotel is pet friendly, maybe they offer a service of someone coming by to check on him and take him out during your golf game. (I can't imagine a golf course allowing a puppy - especially during play.)
And finally, check out doggie day care facilities near where you are staying. These are becoming very big and the dogs have a great time.
Good luck.

I'd take the puppy with. My dad's Biewer rides on the seat with him when my parents play golf. I never got a picture.

I would call a pet sitter that is insured/bonded. You can hire them to come by 2 or 3 times a day & even take him for a walk. It is much better than boarding because they are in their own home and feel safe and secure. The sitter can call, text, email you, whatever you want them to do so you know how your baby is doing.

You might actually like a small break to yourselves & an insured sitter will be very dependable.

Our Austin is 8months old and we travel A LOT. Vacations and business. Austin travels with us on work trips but vacations we find sitters or family. And we do leave him in hotels when we want to have dinner, ONLY after a good long walk so he's tired and not barking disturbing the neighbors. Have a good trip!!!!

Thumbs up

You can take him if u want, but if its too hot thats not good, always u have to make sure he stays on the golf cart. If u can have someone stay with him for a few hours, I think it's best. It's up to u, Have a great outing.

I am on vacation too for the first time with Niyah and she is having a ball with mommy taking her everywhere and introducing her to more dogs and cats.

I have to stay in a hotel even though I have family here. My brother can accomodate us but that is a long story that happened a few yrs back and my mom lives in a one bedroom apt for the elderly so I can't stay there. No enough room. My best friend lives in a small trailor with 2 kids and no room due to only being 2 bedrooms so I have to stay in a hotel as well.

I haven't left Niyah long in the hotel but what I did do was put her in the bathroom (less damage on tile than on the carpet if she pees) and I put in her toys and it can always help to put in a shirt that you wore all day so that she has your scent on it and she will feel less lonely. So go on and have yourself some fun. You deserve it. There will be plenty of places and things you and your baby can do later.

I would take your puppy with you. I have taken Couver with me on vacations, and he loves it. I think that as long as you provide them with water on the golf course, they should be fine... depending on the heat.

I do not like leaving my animals with other people because I don't want to feel indebted to them, and I would worry about how they were. I like being responsible for my babies, and knowing that they are ok

Good luck with your choice!

Be careful about leaving your furbaby in the hotel room by them self.
I was on a work trip with the airlines, and the couple next to my room were going nuts looking for their furbaby that ran out of the room. When housekeeping open their door. I have them clean the room when I'm there or when I leave the room with my dog, Or I would put a sign on the door Do Not Enter, leave the tv on and leave the dog in a crate or in the bathroom.

I'm reading this thread with interest because we are about to take a little three day vacation up north and plan to take Sophie (nine months old) with us. This will be our first time traveling with Sophie that she can't stay at a relative's house. We thought it would be fun as we plan to travel about three hours north and Sophie has a pet view car seat. Even though it's 2009 northern Michigan is fairly unsophisticated so although there are some pet friendly hotels none that I have found will let you leave a dog in the room while you are not there. Either way we will still go however it would be nice if we could go out for a quick dinner and drink but I have not found one that will let Sophie be in our room while we are out. We have a little doggie den that we travel with so she wouldn't hurt the room at all but I guess maybe it's a barking issue with these places. Can anyone tell me what hotel chain will let you leave a dog in the room? I don't mean to hijack the thread but it's sort of related.

My little Sushi travels with me pretty much all the time. She's quite a jetsetter: She travels to Montreal all the time (car or flight), and she has flown to Chicago and New York too. I would say take him with you so he gets used to travelling. Almost all pet-friendly hotels offer to check up on the pup in your hotel room while you're gone, or even have doggy daycare (non-caged) services, either in the hotel or at a facility nearby.

thanks for your input. my brother's offered to check up on him in the morning to feed him and change his pee pads, but I'm nervous that he'll be alone for so long. my husband thinks i'm being a little too protective... but that's 2 days and 1 night by himself with just my brother checking up on him once in the morning... anyway, trips tomorrow... any advice on leaving him alone for that long? is that ok?

ps. we're leaning towards this option because it'll be 94 degrees high where we'll be golfing. any advice on that? is that too hot for a 8 month old yorkie?

Default Drury Inn

DH and I have stayed at the Drury Inn chain with the big boys and never had a problem and bear is 80lbs. We've left them in the room to have dinner and breakfast. I've never seen a rule that stated they couldn't be left in the room and I was never crazy enough to ask if it was okay before I did it. We travel with the girls, also. We have a small 3x3 xpen that is just large enough for pee pad, bed, food and tiny play area that folds flat and sets up in a snap. Both can fit in it and they don't feel crated. We use it when we visit relatives, etc... We would take it to the Drury also, and any other hotel chain that takes pets. They've never been crated. At home they have the huge xpen and the little one is always set up for secondary use, so they are familiar with it.

P.S. the free hot breakfast and Belgian waffles at the Drury rock!

We travel constantly and take our doggy kit wherever we go---when we're out, we bring a small bowl, food, toys etc. The golf cart will be fine as long as you're providing hydration and food and a chance to pee.

It's all about PLANNING and being PREPARED. They are small and need to eat/drink more often than bigger dogs. In a hotel--DO NOT LEAVE alone unless you put the do not disturb sign. We prefer to take a doggy purse and have our puppy join us wherever....

Just be prepared for the time and space the puppy will require or hire the qualified pet sitter at home. Or arrange daycare during the day while you are there! I always check that out and a vet in our cities we visit---so, if the need arises---I'm prepared--we also take shot records and our vet info just in case.

We travel about 20 days a month all over with our yorkie! So lots of experience here.
