| Matted hair and color changes I am new on here and new to having a yorkie. I got my little Gracie 2 months ago. She is the love of my life! I have a few questions. I have noticed the hair just on top of her head is turning silver. She almost looks bald. I know they change colors, but isn't it a little early? Is it strange that it is just in that one spot? also... She stays matted despite daily brushing. Almost feels like little dreadknots all over her. How can I fix that or is it typical of the breed? Thanks! Candice |

| I got Jackson at 9 weeks and he already had a bit of silver on his head at that age Totally normal. And Jackson's hair did the same thing... I had to brush him SO much in order for it to stay somewhat neat. I got him groomed around 4 1/2 months old, I think, and it helped a ton! First picture - Jackson @ 9 weeks old Second picture - Jackson at 10 months old (the bigger one!)

| Same thing with Rily. He is almost 4 1/2 months old and I just gave him his first haircut. In fact, I'm still working on it but here is a before and after look:

| Most of mine broke the silver on top of their head around 3-4 months old. As for the matting, was she this way when you got her? You might consider a good trim job and keep up on the dailey grooming.

| Toby has also developed a little crown of silver. I'd think he had some issues if I didn't know better. I love watching them change. They're so cute |

| How old is your little one? My twins just turned 5 months old and they seem to slowly be breaking silver but I had their sister who pasted away and it seemed like she broke silver a lot earlier. I think it just depends. I am having an easier time with their coats as their sisters was nice and silky but I had to brush it at least twice a day for it not to get matted...and even than it did. Eventually I shaved her down because she wasn't a happy camper.... The new coat was coming in and it was a dark blue color. Anakin and Bella seem to be a little slower with their color development... But their coats are much easier to tend to. I brush them at night and sometimes it's just a 30 second brush because they don't have any mats! They are mostly matted when they are rubbing on the carpet and play fighting... Than they look like Einstein

| My Luna who is 12 weeks old is starting to break silver on her head. Maggie who is 2 years old still has a lot of black on her! Of course Maggie does not have a proper yorkie coat (so far, keep your fingers crossed lol), I am hoping Luna's comes in nice and silky!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I thought Taffy was balding at first when she started turning silver. (As you can obviously surmise, I am quite new to Yorkies.) Ours is about 7.5 months old now and the colors seems to change almost daily. (I know that's an exaggeration but it almost seems that way.) I had major problems, too, with mats but I'm noticing that as she ages, her hair is getting more and more silky. I also learned the hard way that I wasn't brushing her correctly. For lack of a better word, at first I was just "surface" brushing. It's cute though now. When I pick up the brush, if she's not already in my lap, she jumps up in it to be brushed. What was first something I dreaded has become one of our most pleasant "bonding" time of the day. It all changed when a groomer showed me what I was doing wrong. (For one thing I was using the wrong tools, too. Plus, I wasn't brushing "deep" enough which wasn't getting the worst mats. It is much easier now that I've had her groomed and the texture is changing as she ages.) Plus, her "Mommy" doesn't feel quite an inadequate as she did...LOL |

| Hmm, well Maxi is almost 4 months (this friday) and the last two weeks the top of his head is silver and the ends are black, since I havent trimmed it yet and it looks so cute. I checked under the hair and it looks more tan than silver at the roots, so who knows what color he will end up being! lol

| Chloe will be 5 months old at the end of this month and she's been working towards silver since the day we got her at 10 weeks old. At first, it was just the very base of the roots on the top of her head but it has started spreading down her spine now. I'm not sure how long it will take her to fully change colors. Prior to her first grooming (which was just a week or so ago), she would get small tangles at the roots of her fur; it reminded me of the way the hair on a Barbie Doll looks...all separated into rows. I felt like in order to get them out, I was pulling out half of her fur. I bought a new comb, which helped a LOT and then when she got back from the groomers, it was even better. I still brush her every other day, but I rarely encounter tangles or knots. -C

| the top of their head changes very quickly to silver usualy it is the rest of the body that takes a bit longer and for the matts it is because he still has the pupy hair and it is different then the adult hair and they need teice the brushing. You will see once you can feel how soft her top gray hair is you will notice it is much easier to keep their coat away from matts. Good luck
