| flying & yorkies... I'm planning on going to Lithuania this summer (it's in Europe) and staying for almost the whole three months. Tippy is two pounds and is very attached to me. I'm thinking she has seperation anxiety because evrytime I leave the room or go out, all she does is sleep, until I come home. No eating or playing with her toys. So anyways, I was wondering if I should take her with me or leave her behind at my moms house =/ Seems kind of stupid to say, but I'm kind of scared she would forget about me, when I come back. So im more on the side of taking her along with me. HOw was your flying experience with your yorkie? prices? tips? what should i do -thanks in advance |

| It all depends on the airline that you are flying with.... You will have to either call them or look online to see what their rules are regarding pets flying... Some do NOT allow pets in the cabin at all....Others do but require health certificates...while some do not. Many charge..but different fees. The best thing you can do...is check with the airline you plan on flying with. They will be the best ones to help you with that. If it were ME...I'd be taking my babies with me!!! No way could I leave them behind! Good luck!

| Check on Lithuanian animal restrictions before you buy a ticket. Some countries require a period of quarantine time before bringing a dog in. You really need to check on it. I was in Lithuania in 07. The hotel we were in was pretty nice. But European standards of hotels are not what they are in The USA. I would be concerned about where they would put a dog. You wouldn't want him quarantined anyway, regardless of the standards. |

YT 500 Club Member | Traveling with Yorkies - click on that to get to teh right place. I have flown internationally with Meg and I will tell you that if you want to take your pup with you, it's 1) completely doable, and 2) totally important that you choose the right airline. Different airlines charge different amounts of money. For example, United costs $220 (international) one-way, but Delta costs $550 (international) one-way. Do your homework ahead of time by going to the airline's website, clicking on the travel questions/baggage section, then looking for anything that says "pets" or "special baggage". Some airlines will not allow dogs in the cabin at all, so if you want to take your baby, start researching your options now. Another important thing if you want to fly with your pet is that you MUST make a reservation for your pet ahead of time if you want him/her to travel in the cabin with you. I HIGHLY recommend that you do not allow him to travel in the baggage area - for safety's sake. However, FAA regulations allow only a certain number of dogs in teh cabin for flights... usually 2-3 dogs are allowed in economy class, depending on the size of the airplane. Once those spots are filled, you can't get your dog on the plane (unless s/he is a service dog). If you are buying your ticket on expedia or something, call the airline first and ask if they still have room available for in-cabin dogs on the flight. Then buy the ticket online and call the airline back asap to reserve your dog's space. If you go through a travel agent, they will do this work for you. Then you'll need to purchase an airline-approved (well-ventilated, waterproof bottom, and within size regulations) carrier. I have a soft-sided Bergan Comfort Carrier and I love it. (So does Meg!) Get your dog used to the carrier ahead of time by leaving it open on the floor and letting your dog explore it. Put a favorite toy or treat inside to help them warm up to it. Don't zip them up until they've had some time to get used to it. Bring along a leash, water bowls, a toy or two (although Meg never plays with toys in her carrier), food, etc. I bring NutriCal with a vet prescription sticker on it, just in case. If your dog is paper trained, you're in luck. Take the dog to the airplane bathroom (with baby changing table), put the pee pad on the changing table, and you're good to go. You will need a health certificate issued within 10 days of travel (the airline will need this, and customs might need it in Lithuania). Look into which vaccinations are mandatory. Based on the link bchgirl posted, it looks like your dog will just need the Rabies vaccination, but it needs to be given MORE THAN 30 days before you get on the plane. You will also need to have your dog microchipped/tattooed according to that website. Again, do your research and make sure that the website you are reading off of is a legititate, official government site. If you have more questions, feel free to PM me. Also definately read through the Traveling with Yorkies section. THere is a lot of great information there. Good luck!

| I'm not sure where she's getting $220 from for Delta. I flew to America and back to Germany on Delta in February of this year and it was $150 each way. That was with her as a carry on, she sat under my seat. I just consulted with the Delta website and it is now listing $100 each way, but it doesn't specify if that is just domestic or international. Make sure when you pay at the check you don't pay in Euro. I had a friend who did that and paid 150 euro. I brought a copy of the Delta policy with me but had no problems and paid in dollars. BRING HER TO EUROPE! We got our dog here and its great. Europeans are such dog friendly people. At least in Germany you can take them ALMOST anywhere. Restaurants, malls, stores, its awesome. Some countries are a little more strict but if you're coming for three months its worth it. I don't know if Lithuania requires a health certificate, which would be the most complicated thing because you will need a bilingual one. We got one for our military base. First go to a vet and they'll give her an exam and tell you where the closest USDA office is. Depending on where you live you have to find the closest USDA office to stamp it for you. For me it was only 2 hours away, but I had a friend who had to drive 4 hours. Also beware, I had the bilingual HC but when I got to the FDA office they told me that I had to have one fully in English which I had to pay $75 for. When I got back to Germany and went through customs she told me ALL I needed was the bilingual one and didn't even look at the one that was completely in English. I would try just contacting the closest usda office to you, here's their website www.aphis.usda.gov hope that helped! |
