Default Polo Almost Attacked Two Days In A Row

Polo and I walk about 45 minutes around the neighborhood everyday. On Tuesday we went for our normal walk and about half way through the walk, I’m looking around and I see a golden retriever in his back yard and I am thinking he is on a electric fence. I keep walking we get to his house. He comes barking and charging at us on the sidewalk out of his yard. I am quick enough to pick up Polo and walk to the other side of the sidewalk. Now we are on the other side of the sidewalk and then a little girl calls the dog and he comes running to his backyard.
So the next day Wednesday we are on the same walk and we are walking up towards the entrance of the neighborhood. I see two dogs a cocker spaniel and a Pomeranian we are on the opposite side of were the dogs are.
So I keep walking forward then the Pomeranian comes running and barking
At us luckily I had my pennies in a can I shook it really hard. He ran like lighting so I contuine to walk and then he runs back. I shook the can agian and he runs and doesn't come back then a little later the guy calls his dogs in.

I am really sick of people letting their dogs outside of leash. If there dogs are not capable to stay in their own yard.
Why I am just trying to take my dog for a peaceful walk. People need to put their dogs on an electric fence or have them on a leash.

I understand I have the same problem in our neighborhood and the people have fences in their back yard at least but they let the dogs out. I have found alternative streets to walk where I dont encounter dogs. It makes me mad when people arent responsible pet owners

Gosh that is horrible...I live in a townhouse complex and I guess I am lucky that there are no loose dogs here.. that was good thinking to have the can with pennies

I understand how frustrating that is. It's especially sad when the person sees the dog doing it and then doesn't discipline them.

To me, that's one of the most frustrating thing in the world.

Loose dogs scare the pants off me - several years ago I used to take mass transit and walk home. There was this one particular dachshund on the street I had to walk down to go home. It was a fenced in yard but the man who lived there often left the gate open. I was lucky enough to get attacked by this dog on 5 separate occasions. I thank god to the fact that I've always worn thick jeans and sneakers and he was never able to break the skin.

The worst part of the whole deal was that fact that the jerk KNEW. Every single time he would come out to call his dog. How? Because the entire neighborhood could hear me screaming for help as I am running back and forth across the street with the dog running or being dragged behind me. Never once did I get an apology, and never once did he stop leaving his gate open. (I tired contacting the township but it never seemed to do anything since I had no proof of the attack.)

Some people are just idiots or just don't care. I carry "Halt" dog repellent every time I go walking alone or with Winston now. Its what my mail person recommended to me. Thankfully I've never had to use it yet, but I always have on hand now in case I do.

Default loose dogs

Is there a leash law in your city? If so, call the local police dept, or animal control or whatever agency handles nuisance animal ordinance violations in your community and report them, every single time. Just note the address and stand your ground along with your "HALT" and pennies, or whatever until they arrive, if you can, so they don't put you on the back burner and get around to it 3 hrs later when the dog is back in the yard. They can be cited (ticketed) and fined for violation of city ordinance. Sometimes when common sense doesn't exist reaching into their wallet is the only thing they comprehend.

Irresponsible owners and violation of leash laws, make me nuts. My Baxter is blind in one eye because of being attacked by an unleashed large dog. We're still waiting for the blood clot behind the eye to resolve (it has/will take months) to see if the retina has detached before any determination can be made as to whether the eye will ever regain sight or just die and shrink, and have to be removed.

You need to get some Muzzle (doggie mace) to carry with you on your walks. Next time it could be a more determined attacker who won't be scared off by a can of pennies. We have heard too many stories like yours that ended tragically.

I fractured my pelvis several years ago when a loose dog came after Lady. I have had a can of Muzzle attached to the handle of my leash ever since.

Since it's Mace, you have to either order it online or if you live in a state where it is legal, buy it at a sporting goods or gun shop.

Pet stores only carry citronella sprays....good for mosquitoes, but useless if a dog attacks you.

Thank you for the info on the Mace I think most of us have the same problem and I don't know if I could pick up 2 dogs at the same time if something happened. I don't know about other places but in my town more and more people are getting pit bulls. Their is no place to walk without seeing one or more now!!! But the worse part is the owners of this dogs laugh at me because I have "rat dogs" They look like they are going to let them off the leash just to see what would happen.

You know, its sad that people can't act responsibly and keep their dogs in their own yards and then others have to make accommodations for their stupidity. I've done the same thing. I know which streets to walk and which to avoid.

OP, sorry you're going through this.

On a positive note, 45 minutes a day? Awesome!!!
