| Transition to indoor pen from crate My 4 month old boy does well in his crate at night and during the day when I can't watch him constantly. I am usually home during the day but on occasion I have to be gone for 5-6 hours during the day. I have tried putting him in a blocked off area with toys, bed pee pads etc., but he pitches a fit!! Barking, scratching etc., he gets extremely upset. I tried to introduce him slowly, but he still was in a panic. The one time I had to leave him he was shaking and acted terrified when I got him out. He also regressed somewhat with his crate training. Any ideas to help him get more comfortable when I do have to leave him for longer periods? |

| if he's doing pretty well in his crate, try to put him inside the crate and leave the door open and then put the crate inside an exercise pen or play area so he still feels like he's got his own den to go into and be safe. try cuddly toys and chew toys in there. leave a radio on to sooth him...hope he gets used to it. |

| I had his crate in the pen with him but he ignored it. He isn't crazy about his crate at night and short periods during the day, but he does tolerate it with a minimum of crying. I am concerned because he seemed to regress with the crate after the afternoon of confinement in the pen. I won't have many days when I am going to be gone for a long time but I want him to be able to relieve himself on the few days when I am gone. Should I try the pen when I am at home to try to get him used to it or should I save it for those few days? |

| it sure wouldn't hurt to try and get him used to the pen u are using when you're home. that way he's not so scared to be there and he knows you are around when he's in it he'll get better about being comfortable there. what kind of pen do you have? |

| I transitioned from crate training to a pen with my 2 yorkies about 2 months ago. It worked REALLY well for about the first month-and-a-half (now they are back in their crate which I will explain below). Before leaving them alone in their pen, I played with them in the pen, put their crate in there, and their doggy bed. The first day I didn't lock them in there, but called them into their pen several times to play & sometimes they got a treat. You said you tried treats - but maybe you could try "hiding" some treats - like in the corner of the bed, crate, pen, under a toy, etc. That way your little one will be busy in the pen for at least a while. I left my yorkies with a small tasty treat whenever I left (in a kong or a Busy Buddy toy), said "bye-bye" ONE time only, and left. Sounds liek you may have tried this, but if not, hope it helps! So Buster & Bailey are actually back in their crate right now (for the past week or so) because they ate the walls! We have an area in our basement that we blocked off for their "play pen" with sheetrock walls, and when we got home 4 days in a row, they had eaten a chunk out of the walls! I covered up one spot, they chewed on another...so until we get some type of border up (I'm thinking plywood), they are in their crate. Good luck to you!

| I know for my Bailey, She takes fits when ever i leave home but we leave the TV on for her as well as give her a kong toy. She has IBS so she cannot have any treats at all so i put some of her wet prescrotion food in it put it in the freezer then take it out when i leave and it keeps her occupied for hours. Kong toys are very strong and i trust them so i hope this helps and they have all kinds of stuff'n to put in it. Dogs love them. goodluck

| Thank you for all of your suggestions. The enclosure is a small recessed area in the playroom that I have blocked off with a 3' piece of plywood. It is upstairs where we usually don't hang out so maybe that scares him as well. I have considered getting an x-pen that is more open so that maybe he wouldn't be so confined but I have hesitated to spend the money. Do y'all think that would help him or would it confuse him further. |
