Darn, I was really hoping for your opinion. :) I've never considered 'cooking' for my babies (I hate kitchens), but this recipe looks pretty easy. And, a lot could be pre-made then frozen.

Not sure on the supplements..a nutritionist would have to look at it to make sure the cal/phos, etc. is balanced. It looks like you need a multi vitamin though.
also i bet you could sub. raw meat for boiled chicken, i wouldn't think it would hurt at all. we've never tried it, but you could ask your nutr. if she/he thinks that would work better to avoid the raw part, i know lots of people aren't into that part of it.

we like raw because of the breath thing, and it seems to be really good for Bailey, we'll see how Sadie does with it soon.

I'll tell ya that aunt Karrie is on YT as Karrie, so for any questions about it, you can ask her, she's happy to help, also i think i mentioned it, but this is from her mom who is a dog nutritionist.

Bailey is 2 yrs. old now, that's Karrie's yorkie, and she's super healthy for a reference.

Thanks, I think I'll try it out. I had Buttons on processed raw for a long time but the Dh said the vet didn't think it was a good idea. So we switched. The we got Oliver and we have them both on Natural Balance but, I am thinkg of switching them both to raw. I think thet'd be much happier and healthier.

I went and talked to a dog food rep at the store I purchased the Calif.Natural, she tells me that it is legal for there to be a certain percentage of hair or bugs in the dog food! OMG!:eek: For humans it is legal for their to be bug matter in lets say cereal. :confused: Soooo why are we paying top dollar for bugs and hair in dog food? :confused:. It's crazy. I was given store credit. I picked out something very similar to CN minus the hair... made by wellness - simple solutions 1 protein, 1 carb. duck and rice, 21% protein, 12% fat. Zander and Jazzie gobbled it up. I also picked up the honest kitchen, Preference formula, it has dehydrated veggies and you just add the meat which can be raw or cooked. I hope to transition this a little later. I am hoping they don't just eat the meat and leave the rest, hmmm.

Isn't it sad.

You have all these animal rights activists going crazy with all this dog legislature. Maybe they should focus their attention on the Pet Food Industry.

You probably don't want to hear this, but just because you can't see the hair, doesn't mean it's not there..................

Yes, bugs lay eggs in grain (I think that's how it works) and then they hatch in your cereal. Yum.

Oh my that almost made me gag. That is horrible how non-chalant her attitude was. I feed Merricks BG which is grain free. Even when I fed the regular Merricks I never saw any hair in it.

There are a lot of websites out there that help you analyze the ingredients in recipes to make it all easier to look at. Nutritiondata.com is one of the good ones. I believe caloriecount.com has one too.

The one thing I do have to mention from reading this recipe is (at least from a human nutritional standpoint) that raw spinach when eaten regularly consumed decreases the amount of calcium one would otherwise absorb. The oxalates in spinach combine with the iron in spinach - if you are are going beyond the daily calcium requirements you're ok! If not - then you have a potential problem as the normal amount of calcium won't be absorbed. (If anyone would like some research on this let me know.) Its can also also affect thyroid levels so I would be careful about feeding it daily to any dogs with thyroid issues as well. (Sadly, I know that one all to well - I miss spinach!)

didn't know that, you can replace the spinich with any other veggie that dogs can eat such as green beans, corn, carrots, ext. maybe change the veggie with every batch too, just to keep the nutrient levels good!?

I don't see why not (lightly cooking it helps with this problem too)! Spinach is one of those really good foods nutrition wise, (which I am sure if why it was chosen) but its like everything else - variety is a key to life! I just found out the hard way about it when I was eating it almost everyday for a while and my calcium levels dropped significantly.

If the ingredient doesn't say 'organic' or 'natural/free range', the meat will usu contain hair, feathers, maybe even bones. As long as it doesn't say animal by-products (which would contain anything left over that's not fit for human consumption; like feet, head, ect.), but isn't hair, feathers, bones just that, by-products? **shrug**
Oh wow, I just change from the duck small bites to the venison sweet potatoes (kibbles) from NB my girls love it and never had a problem with it, I do cook and mixed with the kibbles they love that:animal-pa and healthy poop and tummy, bright eyes and happy they are:xfingers:

Yikes!! I feed all 3 of mine California Natural canned and a couple of times I saw what looked like a short hair in it but thought NOOO, that can't be. Cali is on if due to her allergies and her really bad tummy problems. The thought of switching and risking major tummy issues is not appealing. I wonder if the fish one would be a better choice?

I've been working with my vet on food allergies. His recommendation was; before you go out and start spending all kinds of food. Put your dog on brown rice and white fish.....within in 4 to 6 weeks you'll find your answer. The white fish and brown rice being kinder to the digestive track. He also informed me that rice and lamb was the food of choice in the past, but it's not as good as the white fish (boneless).
