| Should Hair be an ingredient in Your dogs Food? I have been feeding California Naturals Lamb I was told prior to feeding this food, that this is an american company, all U.S products, nice big clean facility, etc. I researched the ingredients, etc. I felt it was a good choice. Zander had tummy issues a few months ago so I put him on it first to Zander, he likes it, it has 2 main ingredients, so his stools are the size of Peanut M&Ms, sorry. Recently I put Jazzie on it, she did NOT take to it, so I started putting wet meat with it to entice her to eat, it worked but still she is not thrilled about the food. I've been mixing the meat with the dry using my fingers, when I was done I noticed, hair on my fingers, I thought - huh?? Today upon looking CLOSELY at the kibble I SEE hairs STICKING out of the kibble WHHHHHAAATTTT??? I get on the phone with California Naturals customer service, she tells me that it is impossible to get all the hair off the meat before PROCESSING! wwwhhhhaattt?? I respond -the meat at the grocery store does not come with hair or feathers!! then she tries to tell me that dogs eat hair when they are in the wild feeding! My dog is NOT in the wild!! there should NOT be hair in the food , whhhhaatttt??? Oooooh my gosh, I am beyooooonnnddd FUMING MADDDD . She offered me a coupon! Can you saaay - Smaaaack! Am I over reacting, because she seemed soooo calm! Perhaps I am over reacting? It is not a bad idea for you to moisten your hands and see what comes off your dogs dry kibble. Does your lamb formula have hair? or your venison formula have hair? I don't even know what the heck to feed anymore, I have Zero trust in any of these dog food manufacturers.

You have every right to be concerned. However, the pet food industry is not regulated as well as ours (ha, ha, ha, we all know how great that has been in the recent past). Have you seen the feathers on a frier chicken. I've been researching foods, because I have a girl that appears to have food allergies. So far Merrick and Halo come out on top.

| That is totally yucky and I dont blame you for being upset. What dogs eat in the wild and what we want them to have in their dog food is two different things. Someone on here found small bone fragments when they looked closely at the kibble. It is very hard to know what food to trust

| That is just plain gross God only knows what else is in there. Time to research different food and throw that in the garbage where it belongs. I bet your stomach did a flip when seeing that! |

I felt sooo bad for what I was making them eat, geeezz, you have no idea how many hours I have sat researching on the computer, comparing ingredients, checking why this ingredient is necessary, etc. then to find I have been feeding my loved yorkies ANIMAL HAIR!! Yes, I am sick to my stomach. I have also recommended this food to others, it is very upsetting to realize it is Not A+

| I think of that thread every time I open a new bag of food - that picture just won't leave my mind. I scoop a bunch out and look through it before I give it to them.

| But, on the other side of the coin......and maybe a bit grose and lighter side......some do eat their and others poop....and some of the other things they put in their mouth......uck! But, that's for free and we're paying for top grade stuff.

very disgusting, that's why my aunt and i do not feed kibble bought from the store, we are both believers in the home made diet. ours is a raw recipe, but it does require a little cooking (the rice and eggs) but the meat will be raw. if you are interested i am more than happy to share, for my aunt's dog, it makes her teeth cleaner, breath fresher and poop once a day about the size of a tootsie roll, so it's just great for her dog, i'm going to try it with mine, i'd rather my pup be eating people grade food, we both have a problem with feeding our pets the rotten grain and stuff that's been rotting on a chop house floor. plus all the scares that went around with dog food giving renal failure is when she switched over. let me know if you'd like the recipe, it's rather simple and for a yorkie they only eat about a large tablespoon twice a day, you can store it in Tupperware in the freezer too, so it's really quite convenient to make a huge batch once a month or so.. just let me know!!! | |

| no problem, here is what she's written before: The recipe came from my mom who's hobby is dog nutrition. She's very serious about it!! She has helped others who have dogs with special needs by using this basic recipe and then adding supplements based on their situtation. I usually double the batch: 1/2 lb lean ground beef (80% or leaner) 2 can sardines (or canned salmon of the same weight) 1 cup cooked rice 1/2 c. veg of choice (spinach, carrots, etc.) 2 large eggs (slightly cooked) 3/4 tablespoon bone meal 1/2 teaspoon potassium 1 tablespoon safflower oil = 1569 calories I find the sardines rather smelly - so I substitute 4 oz of cottage cheese or ground turkey (I usually do both!). My hubby hunts, so I sometimes replace the hamburger with deerburger. Do not substitute ground pork. Since I removed the sardines (a very important ingredient), then I squeeze a fish oil caplet every other day over her breakfast. I also add 1/3 childrens multivitamin daily (the ones without artificial sweetener). Feel free to add 1 oz of liver to the batch - its good for them. All human grade products. I get the bone meal and potassium from iherb.com. I first made a batch without all the supplements - just to see if Bailey liked it. SHE LOVED IT - so its been this recipe ever since! I serve one spoonful per serving (the larger spoons) twice a day. It doesnt seem like much - I know. I store it in 10 oz plastic containers about 3/4 full in the freezer- one container lasts about 3 days. Tip: I put the raw eggs in the hot rice and let it sit a while (hence partially cooked eggs) Good luck!!! Let me know if you need anything! |
