| Are Microchips transferrable? If you get a rehome that is already microchipped with the previous owners info, how do you get the information switched to the current owner?

| Generally, all microchips are transferrable. For AVID chips you can contact PETtrac directly at (800) 336-2843 or visiting their website at American Veterinary Identification Devices - Home Page (English). And, for Home Again chips contacting Home Again directly at (888) HOMEAGAIN (466-3242) or visiting their website at HomeAgain® - Always looking out for your pet. |

| What if the previous owner won't contact you, you don't know the brand, microchip number, or any info about it...? I have the previous owners name and phone number and I could probably find her address again but I don't know anything else.

| Most shelters or your veterinary office should have scanners that would be able to tell you what type of chip is implanted along with the chip number. Normally ten digit chips are Home Again chips and nine digits are AVID. As for registering the chip in your name, you may have to provide the carrier of the chip with a copy of bill of sale or adoption agreement for verification that the puppy/dog was legally transferred to you. Upon doing so, you'd have to pay a small fee for the records to be updated to show you as the owner. Last edited by MinMuf1; 07-16-2009 at 10:18 AM. |

| If the previous owner registered the microchip, then they will have to give permission to the microchip company in order to make the transfer. If you aren't able to make contact with the previous owner, then call the microchip company and find out what their policy is. I'm sure there are exceptions because, unfortunately this probably isn't an unusual circumstance. |
