Yorkie drowning in pool My sister entrusted me to take care of her "baby" named Jill. She was a 6 lb yorkie female. I left her alone this morning for ONLY A MINUTE outside and I have a pool. When I came back (i left to get her medicine out of the refrigerator) she was face down in my pool. I dove in and tried CPR on her but it didn/t work. I didn't know that a yorkie could drown in less than a minute. Please do not leave any small dog unattended by a pool. How am I ever going to beable to tell my sister that my carelessness caused the death of her most precious loved one? I will never forgive myself! |
Oh this is awful. You're going to have to apologize and give her the news as lightly as possible. Let her know how sorry you are and comfort her if she will let you. I'm so sorry about the puppy. Things like this happen it's just terrible when they do. |
I am so very sorry for the loss. This is a very difficult situation indeed. There have been a few that have drowned, and this is such a tragic accident :( I will pray for your family :( Please tell your sister to join our group. We have lots of members that are grieving and it helps to be able to share and bond together :) |
That is terrible. I don't know what to say to you to make you feel better. Is your sister on holiday and thats the reason you were looking after her dog? Not sure how you are going to break the news, but just explain you did everything you could.Good luck hun. x |
Thank you for your kind words. My sister is on holiday until Wednesday. Do I call and tell her or wait? I can't stop crying, I loved Jill also and will never get over this. How will she ever forgive me? |
So sorry to hear this! I dont get it. All dogs can swim. Our (at the time) 2lb puppy jumped into a pool and swam to the steps in 5 seconds! |

If it were me, I would want to know immediately. But that's me. Plus, I would be calling every day to check on my babies too, so my family wouldn't have no choice but to tell me :( Again, I am so sorry this happened :( |
It doesn't make sense to me either. My daughter is a lifeguard and told me that yes, even a person can drown in 3 seconds if all conditions are right. Jill didn't have any swimming experience and maybe she panicked and sucked water in. I called the vet and he said it can and does happen. They are so small. I am grasping at anything right now. I am so shocked and devastated that this happened. |
I'm so sorry to hear about this. This is really tough, I don't know if it's better to tell her now or after she returns from holiday.:( |
Sending prayers for all! |

Its a hard decision but you know your sister best ,are you close? Welcome to Y.T by the way , you and your sis can always talk to us.Sending hugs. |
that is so tragic. It may be better to wait to tell her but I can imagine when she gets back and you tell her she would wished you had told her when it happen. I know it may ruin her holiday but it may be best to tell her so she is prepared emotionally and it doesn't hit her all at once. |
awww...im so so sorry. this makes my eyes tear up! |
Such a tragedy for all. I could not imagine being you or your sister. I know accidents happen. We all can learn from this and be more aware Sending Prayers I know it is not easy Bless you RIP sweet Jill I have a Jill too and your story touched me I am so SORRY! I will pray for you all Vicki |
Wow, so sorry. Don't be too hard on yourself. I have a pool and my Coco is 5 lbs. She was outside on our patio. I always watch her. I have a friend who has a Yorkie/ Maltese. She told me Coco would not go near the pool, her doesn't. Anyway, I walked a few feet to empty my dryer and when i returned( 3min max) Coco was at the door drenched. I freaked out. Thankfully, she managed to get out. I think she fell in by the stairs and found her way out. I was LUCKY, but I felt like a terrible mother for it happening. She now has a life vest. I think I would tell your sister. I know it will ruin her time, but I think I would want to know. For most of us our pets our additional children or our only children. You wouldn' t want someone to wait till you came home to tell you your child drowned, so I would think most people would feel the same way about their furbaby. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this tough time. |
Not to bash you but Would you leave a small child outside by him/herself near a pool? Accidents such as this should never happen......... Yorkies lungs are smaller than any childs, even a new borns...... They can fill up with water in a matter of seconds...... |
Please dont feel bad. Its not your fault. I hope everything goes ok with your sis. Im very sorry. |
So very sorry that this horrible accident happened.....it is very sad...:( |

I'm so sorry this happened. It was an accident. Please call your sister - she needs to know. Prayers to you.... |
I am really sorry this happened. If it were me I would want to know as soon as possible. I'm sure she will be upset but I think she should be told right away. |
Don't dogs swim naturally? |
I am so sorry. I understand you wanting to wait to tell her so she can enjoy her holiday but if it was me I would want to know now. Plus you need to get this off your chest. Accidents happen and this was not your fault. |

Kathy, tell your sister straight away. I was watching my mother-in-law's beloved poodle. she was sleeping on the couch in our bedroom, my 25 yr daughter and I were up and about starting our day. We heard ginger let out a loud yelp. by the time we both reached my bedroom and the couch she was laying on she was dead! SHE WAS JUST SLEEPING!!!! Did I feel terrible? OF COURSE! Was I at fault? no how could I be. She happened to have a heart attack and died. IT was instant. I called my mother in law later that day after we got the dog to the vet. and got things settled at home. She took it very hard. ( who wouldn't) but it was best to let her know the day it happened. She was able to prepare herself emotionally to return home to no dog. Give your sister that opportunity as well. she needs that time. Maybe you can offer to buy her another yorkie and the 2 of you can pick it out together. Things happen for a reason. Allow this to bring you even closer with your sister. I am so sorry you are going through this. My prayers go out to you and your sis. BLessings>>> and may the little furbaby R.I.P.:( |

I'm so sorry that this happened to your family. ((((((Hugs))))))) prayers and warm thoughts to you all! |
I just wanted to tell you, I am so sorry you are going through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. |
Oh no, that is so sad :(. Hope you told her and things went ok. I don\'t even want to go on vacation without my Scruffs. I don\'t think I could leave him with anyone since no one will give him the kind of care I do. I do pet sitting which is kind of ironic.. Although I know there is no one out there that takes better care of the pups than me. I fall in love with every dog I pet sit and I want to keep it. Every time. |
