We took Jamie to the July 4th Balloon Glow last year and he did WONDERFUL! After reading a bunch of horror stories, I had gotten worried about him running off and freaking out so I was totally prepared to have to leave and miss it. Thankfully he just layed in my lap getting a massage and fell ASLEEP! We had been out there several hours though and he was pretty tired. Just in case, the massage consisted of putting my thumbs on his ears and rubbing his head.

Jamie is very well socialized. He goes to all the parades and events. He goes to my roommate's brothers ballgame (what a hoot! He is a very avid baseball fan!). He also goes to my mom's every Sunday which is an adventure in and of itself! As long as he's with me, Jamie's happy.

This year we're probably gonna go to the Balloon Glow/Fireworks Show again and take him and Beau.

We had some fireworks at the beginning of the month for our annual Wheelfest here in town. Its actually right next to our house so we could watch from our driveway. We decided to bring Gizmo outside with us and it was his first time with the fireworks and OMG he was terrified!!! He made a bee line for the front door (which was open but the glass storm door was there) ran right into it and bounced off! (I had to laugh a little bc it was funny). He won't even go near a bonfire now! I think the crackling noise reminds him of the fireworks!

If it were me, I wouldn't take them. Especially since they have never experienced it before. If you have to leave them home while you go, it is much safer, and keep them in a confined place so they will feel safe even with you gone. If you are home while the fireworks are going off, you'll get a good indication of how they handle them. Personally, I wouldn't take a dog to a fireworks display no matter what breed they are.

I think this is a great idea for people that are afraid to leave their dogs home alone on a night where the doggies can really freak out because of the noises and being alone.
This is such a great idea! People are so creative.

What do you recommend???

Thanks for your suggestions as always!

Big Hugs,
i think it's best if you leave her home, because just because she is not scared of thunderstorm doesn't mean she won't be scared in a new/unfamiliar place with loud noises going off like that.

it will be easier for you to enjoy your time as well, if you don't have to worry about your little girl.

I did not take time to read thru all the posts but I will tell you my experience. Gizmo is almost 12 and has never been afraid of fireworks, gun shots, etc. Two years ago I took him to fireworks on the lake. We were in a pontoon boat and the fireworks were going up above our heads. It absolutely scared him to death. To this day if he hears fireworks or a gun shot he gets scared. I wouldn't chance it if I were you.

Just adding my vote against taking them to fireworks show unless you know for sure how they will react. All of mine hate the fireworks and firecrackers that will start tomorrow and go through the weekend. I am dreading it. We stay home but you can hear them all over. They will shake, and bark, and pace, and generally be so nervous I know they are miserable all night long. I wish I knew something to do for them but they just do not like the noise.

Thumbs up

Thank you all again for sharing all of your advice. Due to all of your personal stories and some of my own research I have decided AGAINST taking Bella to the fireworks.

I think you should do what you think is best... You can hold them if they get scared... I am sure before the fireworks they will have so much fun!! This is Zsa Zsas first 4th but Pixie doesnt really care for them but I just hold her during them... and she had so much fun before the fireworks playing and walking... she slept good later that night.

There is no easy answer.
Some dogs do well and some don't.
To say absolutely not wouldn't be giving them a chance.
I think for the first year I'd stay around home and see how she reacts..maybe walk down the road with her and see what she does. If she does very well with it, I don't think there is any reason not to try it next time.

The first year I had Roxie we took her but we sit pretty far away in my FIL's yard. She did fine. Last year we took her to the parade and she was ewed and awed over walking to our sitting spot. Well....once it started she was ok untill the firetrucks went by and started blaring sirens and horns. I had to cover her poor little ears she was shaking all over. She's not going this year. I don't want to damage her hearing...their sense of hearing is so much more sensitive then ours. If it's loud for me it's gotta be more then double that for her.

I'd say "NO" with a big N and big O! The sounds are loud and startling to us, and we know they're coming and have much less sensitive ears! My uncle had a Bull Mastiff (HUGE dog) and when it was a puppy, it was startled by a firecracker outside in the backyard. Ever since then, they had to give the dog tranquilizers whenever it was Fourth of July, The New Year or if they knew there was going to be a thunderstorm because the dog acted so erratic and scared that it would knock things down and curl in a corner (this is a 250lb dog, years and years after the first incident). This is why I wouldn't bring my little dog. She's better off home and safe. Inside, you can barely hear them and that's better off for them. Fireworks are entertaining to us and only us. They scare the sh*t out of every other animal! :P
