My baby boy and I had a terrifying encounter yesterday with an off-leash Great Dane mix. We live in a nice neighborhood that unfortunately has several residents who are obsessed with their "harmless" dogs being off the leash.
I scooped my little guy off the ground and cradled him protectively under my chin as the big dog charged me and I ran to the door of another neighbor. The owner of the huge dog stood on her doorstep watching and yelling at me, "He isn't going to bite you." I cried and begged, "Please, please, please get your dog," as he jumped up on me. I am rather tall, but the dog is even bigger and could have easily taken me to the ground.
How can people be so stupid and cruel? I don't want to let her huge dog snap my baby's neck to prove that even the nicest dog will probably seriously harm or kill my puppy in such an encounter on the street. I don't care to "socialize" my baby with other dogs, particularly off-leash dogs. That is my choice, not hers. I simply want to be able to walk around the block in relative peace and security.
I will be purchasing pepper spray and a taser ASAP.
