I'm looking for a deterrent to keep dogs from biting my dog when we are out.
 

I would appreciate any help anyone has to offer. I am looking for something that I can carry with me to keep dangerous dogs away if their intent is to bite/attack. A short time ago I had Calleigh at an outside flower place. Naturally she was on her leash. I just put her down and there was a silky there before I knew it biting her. She started bleeding from her ear. I picked her up immediately and the dog grabbed onto her backside. I had no choice but to kick at the dog to get it off. People came and the owners daughter took the dog away. It turned out Calleigh was ok. Thank God! Yesterday we were walking on our regular route and a huge, I mean huge, Shepherd mix came flying from his yard on the hill at us. Luckily for us this dog was friendly. I am now offically paranoid to take her out anywhere. I'm a rather small person so I wouldn't be able to hold a dog like that back. My friend of mine who is a vet told me that mace doesn't work on dogs. It only makes them angrier. Any ideas?

YIKES! I don't know...i have a stroller for my girls when i take them out in public. Maybe you could get one of those to keep her safe. I love having my 5 contained. :D

I have thought about it. She loves to walk. She has put on some weight through the winter and I really would like her to get some exercise also.She's also a little hyperactive still and needs that release. I am going to check with my pet supply store, to see if they have anything. It's really not fair that she has to suffer because people don't contain their dogs. If it comes down to life or death it will have to be a stroller. It's just sad if that would have to happen.

Mace should work on dogs it depends on what kind of mix you get and the % of pepper. They also sell dog pepper spray.

Pepper spray should do the trick.

I have a small can of peppr spray that I carry and also a tazer. I have not had to use either but always have at least one of them and wouldn't hesitate.

This is very encouraging news. Thank you eveyone! I wouldn't use pepper spray only if I had too, that is for sure. I'll check out all of this wonderful information. I feel safer already. :) Do you have to be licensed to carry it?

I wouldn't use pepper spray - It could blow back into your face or hurt your dog - like if you had to spray it at your dog and another dog to break up a fight.

Premier makes a product called Spray Shield. It's a citronella spray. It's the same thing they use in the spray bark collars. It's around $10 and last I checked they sold it at Petsmart and you can definitely get it online!

By the way I've seen it in action. It just makes the dogs sneeze a lot. At least if it was a neighbor's dog or something, and you weren't sure if they were going to bite but you were scared, they wouldn't be mad at you for hurting their dog. It wears off in about 2 minutes.

Thanks, Carol, for asking this question, and for those of you that posted responses. Learned something new and plan on shopping for something for our walks, too.

Echo'ing Lisa/Pic's response, thanks for all the info. The boys were attacked 3 times in the first few months we had them. I will be looking at some of the deterrents mention. There are people in our neighborhood that just will not admit that they do not have that great a control over their dog(s) and insisted on walking them off leash. 1st, it's against local law/ordanance for the dog to be off leash outside the house/yard. Second, if the dog attacks/bites someone or bolts out into the street and is struck by a vehicle the dog loses both times.

Mean Dogs Beware!! Yorkie Talkers won't take it anymore!! I think it's great most of you are willing to take the extra step to keep your pups safe. The incident with Calleigh really opened my eyes. It should never have happened. If something does happen again, we will be ready. Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I say a baseball bat!!! How dare these inconciderate idiots to leave their dogs off leash. I say they are free game if their owners don't restrain them. My babies are to important to me and I would do anything to protect them. What is wrong with people. They are barking up the wrong tree if they think we yt's are not going to fight for our babies safety.

Right, the spray could get on your baby which is why I bought the tazer. I do still carry them both and hopefully won't have to use either but have heard way too many horror stories to not be prepared to protect my "kids" when needed.
