Poor baby's nails about 1" long

I have not had to trim Edie's nails for a long time (several months) because we walk a few times a week on pavement, which files the nails down. Also, she has 24/7 access to our walled-in backyard (via a doggie door) and there are paved areas of the yard.

My mother is one of these horrible people. She has a VERY overweight Rat Terrier and she lets his nails get WAY too long. I try and nudge her "Hey! Allie needs to go to the vet for XYZ...whatever, Why not bring Jorge to get his nails done?" It is so sad! I have gone and kidnapped him while she was at work sometimes just so that they didn't get this bad. If you are going to own a dog, care for your dog.

When i still groomed i had people call and ask how much to have nails cut and i charged 5$ and you can't believe how many thought that was to much! at vet 7$ plus 35$ office call.

We cut our boys' claws every week (just a bit at a time). Once in a while we miss a week, but we really try to every week. The back paws don't need it, we just do the front.

Wow. I feel like a neglectful mommy! I usually take Addie about once a month. I'm definitely going to start keeping a closer eye on my pup's nails! Why is it that the front paws need it more than the back paws? Is that typical with every pup? Do they just grow slower?

I'm not totally sure, but maybe it's the angle of the back claws compared to the front...and that they use their back paw/claws to "push" their bodies forward.

I don't know that all dogs need it each week. One of the reasons we do it is bc, for whatever reason, Wylie's quick can grow toward the tip very fast. So, we do it often bc if we waiting too long, we'd end up cutting his quick even if we just cut a little.

Once a month might be great for your baby! A groomer could probably answer what the "standard" might be.

Thanks for all the information! I'll be sure to ask my groomer (and my vet because a second opinion never hurts!) about what she thinks is the best for Addie.

Most of the time Uni's back claws don't need it either. That's b/c most of the time when we put the harness and lead on, she goes into crazy mode, and starts pulling and hopping around on her back feet. That files them down a bit. LOL
