Creating a Grooming Area on the Cheap! 3 Attachment(s) Creating a dog grooming area isn't really a luxury for yorkies; it's more of a necessity. Daily grooming is more important than with many other breeds, and having a designated area with supplies is really convenient. I know many of you have created "to die for" grooming spaces, but I wanted to create a space in the office, and we didn't have much extra room. Joey's kennel was in here anyway, and he snoozes in it when I'm posting away at YT. :D I found a little folding table at Target that was around $35.00. Folding Table - Black (20 x 48") : Target, and it fits right over Joey's kennel so it doesn't seem like I'm wasting much space space. I found a plastic Sterlite storage bin with wheels, also at Target, (on sale), Storage Bin and it fits under the table too. A towel rack hanging on the wall that will hold child size hangers, completes my renovation! The good part is if I ever decide to redo the spare bedroom and buy one of those cute baby changing tables, I can always use my folding table for something else. Attachment 278895 You can tell in this picture Joey's really psyched! Attachment 278896 Here's a close-up of my freshly brushed baby. Attachment 278897 I thought that this might give, some of you, ideas on creating your own space, and maybe some of you others might give some tips for economical ways to create a grooming area. |
You go, girl...you little Ty Pennington! That looks fabulous!!! |
What an awesome area! I mentioned using one of those cart/drawer things for my baby's stuff and my DH looked at me like I had lost my mind. Now I will show him what a little imagination can do! Maybe I can sneak a grooming station in there without him realizing it till it's done! ;) |
Joey is SOooo cute! I think that I have THE most economical grooming area ever (I'm so cheap). I took a spare leash and tied it to the towel rack above my bathroom countertop. Yes, I groom Missy right on my bathroom counter LOL! It was free because I already had the spare leash :p and I just toss all of my grooming products in one of the bathroom drawers. Works for us! Although I love the space that you've created. I just don't have room for it. |
Great idea Nancy. Awww look at Joey sitting there all prettied up. He's so adorable. 1/3 the size of Buddy:rolleyes: I purchased a grooming table that goes up to 36" in height. I need that because my back was breaking bending over the table, which I covered with a heavy plastic tablecloth when grooming him. Now it's easy. I have it folded in one of my closet's and his grooming supplies in two plastic containters with lids stored in the closet as well. Living in a condo you have to be organized and every thing has a place. I can't stand clutter. My 2nd bedroom I turned into a family room so I had to find another way of storing his things. Love Joey's clothes hanging there. So cute. All Buddy's shampoos, conditioners and towels are in the laundry room on a shelf. You really do need lot's of room for these guys. Huh? |
I love your grooming area! You have alot of good ideas for people like me who are short on space. I think I can do what you did in my laundry room. Its a very small room but I have a small counter top area it would work in |
We have had the same idea . |
What a great space! Looks wonderful:)Joey looks very happy too:p |
nice and such a cute baby!!!!!!!!! |
What a beautiful idea for a handsome little guy. I love the way you did your walls too Nancy. I usually groom in my big bathroom but I really need a grooming arm. Would love to eventually do a space like yours. |
 I love your work area and your baby looks adorable. Thanks for sharing this. |
i love this idea! i'm going to do the same thing myself! |
Nancy I am so jealous (: I think I may have a table similar to that and I am SO going to try and set up something like this! I'm starting from scratch though so could you list some good grooming products that I may need? From blow dryers, brushes, something to keep him from moving too much? This was a great post (= :clapsmile:goodpost: |
Nancy....this is great work! You always have such clever ideas. I have one of those small, circular grooming tables from Pet Edge. I think I too paid around $37 for it. This might be a nice addition too as the table spins! I liked that idea. Then I'm not moving Sophie around...I just spin her! Gently, of course. Kudos to you...it looks great! |
You guys are all so great; you really know how to make someone feel good! Rwprivette, to answer your question, on grooming supplies, there are a few products that I really love, Petsilk topknot gel for holding back those, nose/forehead hairs that don't reach the topknot yet. I've tried several different shampoos, my favorite so far is the Biogroom shampoo and cream rinse, but I like to switch it out and use other things occasionally. One of my favorite grooming aids is Gerard/Pellham Whispering Mist, just a slight spray makes his coat look wonderful. My hair dryer is one I got at Pet Smart, it's quieter than most dryers, and I like the hands free option. The grooming forum Yorkie Grooming Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community has all sorts of threads on favorite shampoos, conditioners and grooming products, and many companies will send you product samples if you request them. Here's a link the Biogroom Co. just click on "contact us" and ask for a sample pack. There products are very concentrated, so be sure and mix them with 4 parts water before using. Nancy, Your grooming area is ideal! The towel rack is a prefect solution for hanging up clothes . Do you also trim and cut Joey's hair? I take Suzi to the groomers for her cuts and trimming. She is now finally coperating , and I am able to groom her easily. I sit her on my lap and use brushes, combs, conditioning sprays to make her pretty. She is very patient. I now think it is time to set up space for all of the supplies, and have everything in one place to groom her. Instead of having to bring it all out on the couch :) I need to check into the Petsilk topnot gel> Suzi has hair above her eyes that is too short , and I'd love to pull back . For her clothes, I hang them up in my closet, she has her space . I have seen the blow dryers at Petsmart , and wondered if they were quieter. Thanks for telling us. I am going to need to get one too . |
That looks great!! Nice job!!!!!! |

I LOVE that idea and I'm sure you inspired those of us who are not the Ty's of the world. I love how you put that table over the sleeping crate..great way to save space. Ahhh Joey looks adorable on top of his world and oh so handsome! Love it and thanks for sharing - oh and gotta love the towel rack for the clothes!! I already have the plastic storage cart and love that but you gave me the idea of putting the table over it all. You could also get that portable grooming table that's pink at one of the dog grooming sites - I think it's about $50 and it swivels. |

If anyone uses the towel rack idea, you have to get a rack that extends from the wall, half the size of the hanger. They sell smaller hangers than I used; I just got some regular children's hangers, so I had to find a rack that extends further than most. I've been trying to do my own grooming, Joey went to his breeder's house once, (she lives an hour away) and I loved how she cut him, everything was even, and I tried to pick up as many hints as I could remember. We need to go again soon. I just find the space useful for the daily things like putting in the topknot and regular brushing, and combing his little mustache. The only thing I can't do is his nails; I take him to the vet for that. I made him bleed once and that was the end of my nail cutting career. |
Kisses for Joey! Nancy, this is a brilliant idea! Thanks for posting this...lots of people will benefit from your ingenuity!!:D |

Thanks for posting that. I have been thinking about setting up my own grooming area now that we are in a bigger house. That is neat! |
this is a great idea!!! and your baby is sooo cute :) i also have to comment on the RED WINGS stuff :D gordie howe and then i think i saw steve yzerman's number up there too ;) i was yzerman's biggest fan (and also had a huge crush on him LOL) and it was soooo sad when he retired :p i think i cried through his entire last game!!! :( :D |
AWESOME!!! And Ummm, Joey is GORGEOUS!! Great job!! I also groom Snickers on my own, we do what LilMissy's mom does, right on the bathroom counter so I can get all the hair cleaned up easily that way as well. Actually when I trim Snick and cut hair, he just stands there nice and still. I give him little breaks to move around. When cleaning his eyes, I always need running water so the sink being there is ideal. I wash him in my jaccuzzi tub (he is to big for our tiny laundry sink now & can jump out) in our bathroom as well...it works well for us. GO RED WINGGGGGGGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! xoxox:D -Snick & Viv |
What a great job! The space looks neat and organized. And Joey is such a little doll :) |

Joke below for Red Wings Fans Only: Wayne Gretzky dies and goes to heaven and sees this huge mansion, and at the top of the roof is the word "Yzerman" in big lights. He looks around and he's really impressed, but as he's shown his house, he notices it's nice, but much more modest. He's says to St. Peter "I don't get it, I know Yzerman was good, but why does he rate such a better house than me?" And St. Peters says, "Oh that's not Yzermans house, that's God's house!" LET'S GO RED WINGS! |
thank you for posting this. the grooming area looks so cool and joey is so cute!!!! :D |
Joey is ADORABLE!!! I need to set up something like this sooo badly. Thanks for the cheap, creative idea!! |
