We have an almost 9-yr old male, neutered, registered, 5 lb yorkie. He did NOT transition well with baby #1 and baby #2 will be arriving soon, so we are looking to re-home him. Being 100% honest, he will NOT go to a home with small kids or other pets. He also doesn't like men since our house was broken into and he was home alone at the time. The ideal home is a single woman who has time to let him out. He is crate trained. He had bladder stones removed 3 years ago and needs to be let out every 4-5 hours during the day and can do a 9-10 hour stretch overnight. He is on a Rx food that can only be purchased from a vet, but is not expensive. Ironically, the yorkie rescue groups are not responding to my requests and if we don't find a home within one week, we are going to put him down. There is a rehoming fee to cover the food, leash, toys, crate, etc. Took this picture last year; his hair is cut very short right now.

I'm sorry, and I'm not trying to sound mean, but, why would you rehome the oldest yorkie you've had? It's almost like you don't want them when they get older and only want the young ones. I have an 11 year old shih tzu, I'm sure she wasn't thrilled when i started bringing new ones home(6, 4, 11 mos and now 4 1/2 mos), but, mine are taught that not getting along is NOT tolerated. I'm the top dog in this house, and then the shih tzu is 2nd. The only one I have to watch, is the 11 mos old one, she's under 3 lbs. and she likes to just dare others to try taking her treat, then likes to show her teeth. That's all she does, and if she ever bit them, then we would deal with her, but, no way would I get rid of my 11 year old shih tzu for nothing. This was her home first, and if any of them had to go, it sure wouldn't be one of the ones that have been here this long! And, why in the world would you put him down in a week if you don't find him a home? I'm sorry, but, this just really upsets me, and I'm sure it's going to upset just about everyone else that reads this!

I feel so bad for this poor dog. She even threatens to put him down. I dont know what these ppl think. I do think that the babies th efr to are human babies but none the less....

Yes, this is a very upsetting one . I think whoever posted it is insane, and i am dreadfully concerned about this poor little male Yorkie. They seem like they cared well for him though, However, now at age 9 yrs old, they are rehoming the little guy? How sad. I am in Ca, and there is nothing I can do. I hope someone in Tx , can , and is interested. I just do not understand how people can be so cruel.

Im sorry everyone...had to take my daughters to their physicals at the DR.'s. I think that it is hard enough to place any Adult dog and I think this craigslist lady makes it harder by putting even more restrictions. I mean even if i wanted to help I couldnt cause I have kids and a Husband. I mean maybe i can understand the no kids if the dog is aggressive but she then say the dog doesnt like men??? Im really upset about this. I dont have any info on her other then that ad but does anyone have any suggestions. I was hoping to reach out to someone close enough to try to help. Do you think that if I could convince my husband that I should try to get him? Even if it means saying I am single with no kids. I hate the thought of a Dog who seems to have had a great life just coming to an end because there is no where else to go.

This is a scam. Rehoming fee??? No way, if you are rescuing/adopting from a family, you pick up the dog, what's left of the food, his bed, toys, leash, etc. You do not give them money for that. And the fact that they say they will put him down if they can't rehome by next week? It's to get the victim to feel sorry for the dog (which may not even exist) and give them money.

I had an elderly client of mine that couldn't keep for adult male yorkie (her husband died and it was his dog for the most part) and I asked her how much she was asking for him. She said "nothing, just to a good home is all". That's how much it should cost to rehome an older dog, NOTHING.

I do not think this is a scam. Unfortunately, giving a dog for FREE is a HORRIBLE idea. In today's world there are very, very *sick* and *evil* ppl. They stalk Craig's List and Other's for FREE or Cheap animals. They pose as loving ppl, and they turn around and do some of the following:
Abuse and/or Neglect
Sell to Lab for Research
Use as bait for Dog Fights

Charging a reasonable rehome fee to the BEST thing to do, this will ensure the new family is serious and responsible about caring for your pet.

The rehome fee could be donated to a rescue as well.

- Screen people very carefully over the phone and check all references before proceeding. The best reference is from a veterinarian. It's easy for a person to list their friends, who may not be honest, as references.

- Some individuals and rescues screen people based on appearance. This is not a safe way to find a home. You cannot tell if a person is responsible and caring by the way s/he looks.

- Ask for identification. Copy down the full name, address, and phone number.
Also copy the driver's license number and car license plate tags.

- Do a home check before you agree to adopt out the animal and, when it is time, bring the animal to their new home. Never let someone take the animal from
you to an unknown location.

- All applicants should complete an adoption application and, if the adoption is approved, sign an adoption contract.

This is very strange since YHR is based in Houston TX. If there was real inquiry there is NO WAY they would be turned down. Something is just not right about this ad. It wouldn't matter is Linda had dogs on her head she would open her home to another to make sure it was not PTS or given away on Craigslist.

Forward the link in my signature to this woman and have her fill out a surrender application. If we cannot take him someone in the Houston area will.

This little guy is now with Yorkie Haven Rescue. Thankfully, someone from another rescue here in the Houston area sent the CL post to me...I don't like looking a CL, so would never have seen it. Anyway......his name is Gizmo and you can follow his progress on our site if you are so inclined. He does have some issues that need to be addressed and does need a dental in the near future. He had one a couple of years ago and lost quite a few teeth...I am hopeful he will not lose more.

First of all, I want to clarify a couple of things. I, like a few other people on here, was taken aback by the poster on CL saying she would euthanize him; but rather than even address that at first, I chose to write to her and ask who she had contacted in yorkie rescue because she did NOT contact YHR. Well...she did contact a group that will remain unnamed. There are many times that we don't have room, but we always refer people to another group. They, for some reason, did not do that.

Anyway....after her response, I wrote back and offered to assist her. She brought her little guy to me last week and he is in my home safe and sound. She did not want to euthanize him, but had placed him in two different homes and he was returned to her within 24 hours from both places. She felt that if he was going to continue to be traumatized like that, euthanizing him might be less painful for him. I understand why he did not work out with the other homes ....the first day, he sat in a corner and snarled at me! He is past that now....but, he is a very timid little pup and does put his teeth on you as a warning and I have no doubt that he would bite if pushed far enough. I am working slowly with him and he is warming up. At this point, he cannot be groomed and hates to have his feet touched. He hides out most of the day...I have provided a covered crate for him that he can go in to hide out. Gradually, he is venturing out and trying to make friends with my pups. He almost jumps out of his skin if I pet him without letting him know it is me...poor little man. He does give lots of yorkie kisses when picked up! He is a sweet little guy...just has been through a lot.

His owner had all of his vet paperwork and did make a donation towards his care, so she really did care for him. He had surgery for bladder stones a couple of years ago. He is up to date on shots .. will need them again in August...so he was cared for!

Apparently, something went wrong with her child...sometimes people let these things get out of control...they really do not know how to introduce a child to a pup that has been an only pup for years. It is very common. Yorkies especially can get very annoyed and nippy when children play around them. They get scared...their teeth are their only defense. This lady knew that another child would be the last straw.
