| a long airplane trip My humans are taking me to California for the summer. I'm supposed to go in a carrier, under the seat, and sit in there for five hours. Sounds like misery. Can anybody give my owners some heklp with best ways to take me along on the trip? Thanks, Macho New York City |

| Dear Macho, I would make sure to remind them that you will need some food and water for the trip, possibly a doggie diaper since you ill not be able to go out for quite some time. If you have never flown before they might want to look into either natural or speak to the Vet on how best to make you relax. Please also remind them to put a toy and a blanket or towel in your carrier. If they put the towel or blanket in there laundry basket for a few days before the fight it will really smell like them to you making you much more comfortable. Have a great time in California. | Tell them to bring a big blanket to cover up in... then sneak you underneath the blanket!

| Sneaking you under blanket While this might seem like a good thing to do. If you get caught, and you will, the airline might ban you from bringing the dog back on the plane for your return flight........ Then what would you do? From articles I've read you should have either an early morning flight or late night flight so your dog will be tired and go to sleep easier. Also, make sure he/she has pottied before boarding the flight. On a 5 hour flight I wouldn't feed him/her right before the flight either. Have a good flight. |

| I took mine from VA to CA, and all was well. We flew on Virgin America. Their guidelines for bringing a pet along are the same as you mentioned. I was able to take him out during the flight, though. He sat on my lap the whole time, and the flight attendants were definitely fine with it. There were many pets on that flight and one of the owners even got up to walk her dog up and down the aisle! I think that was a bit much, though. Make sure you get a health certificate for your dog before you fly, or you won't be able to take your dog along for the trip. Some airline require the health certificate written within 10 days of the flight, others 30 days. You should call the airline and check. I'm pretty sure you will not have to keep your baby under the seat for the full 6 hours or so you'll be in the air. |

| I don't agree with withholding food and water. They need to eat/drink just like we do and going too long without can cause hypoglycemia, especially if gets anxious. First of all, make sure you are very used to your carrier. Definitely have a blanket in there as it can be very cold along the floorboards. Bring a few pee pads with you. You can always go to the restroom on the plane a couple times. I would take the carrier with you just like you would a purse and while in there, put the pee pads down on the floor and let him out. If he needs to relieve himself, great - if not it will allow him to stretch his legs a little!!! Make sure you have identification on him and the carrier and bring a leash as well. Many airports will not allow them to be on a leash on the floor - they must either be carried or in the carrier. Not all airlines demand the health certification, so make sure you know if you need to have one. Having a few small treats on hand may help as well. Also, although the carrier has to be under the seat for take-off/landing, you will most likely be able to put the carrier on your lap during the flight (except for during beverage service). It completely depends on the flight attendant, but most are getting really picky about making sure the carrier stays closed. But, unzipping a little a putting your hand in to comfort him may help if need be. The motion of the plane may just lull him to sleep for a while as well. Good luck - I'm sure both he and you will do just fine!!!!
