| AKC registration, is there a reason..... to register if you don't show or breed your dog? Samson didn't come with papers so I never had to decide if I was going to register him or not. Harley came with papers and we just got him neutered yesterday and he isn't a show dog so is there a reason to register him?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, there is a reason to register him, the AKC should be supported by pet owners, not just breeders, pet owners should take more of an interest in legislation that is being passed. Furthermore, you are also supporting the inspection of kennels when you register, many states don't even inspect kennels if the kennel is registered with AKC, so that leaves all the inspection up the AKC. There are also other programs, such as "Search and Rescue" that is funded by the AKC that you will help support. The $20.00 fee allows your dog to go down in history, and I'm hoping that in the future with greater technology, scientists will learn more about genetic diseases through this registry. Also, by registering your dogs, you help keep breeders honest, many breeders tell buyers the dogs are AKC eligible, but in truth they are not. Just because the parents were registered, many people believe the offspring can be registered, but this isn't true at all. The breeder must have registration rights. The AKC is one of those clubs that the fee is modest, but most people can't get into because they aren't eligible. So if your dog is really eligible, register him! If in the event of unforeseen circumstances, it would ever be necessary to rehome your dog, an AKC registered dog would probably have a much easier time finding a new home. Registering the dog also tells the AKC, how many actual liters a particular dog is producing, and this means more frequent inspections, and possibly even DNA testing.

YT Addict | If the breeder gets puppy papers on the puppies they can keep and know when a breeder has had puppies. So by the owner paying AKC again for papers is not helping get kennels inspected. That goes by if the breeder reg. the litter. And for as inspected Akc only has a very very few inspectors (under 10 for the USA) when a breed has a few litters (under 4) a year that are put in a hat and drawed out to see how gets inspected. This has nothing to do with the owner of a new puppy sending in their puppy papers. Which is up to them if they want to send that money. I just wanted you to know how the inspection went. I know breeders that has been breeding for 30 years and has been inspected 2 times. So they don't inspected that much. Which is bad because the ones that need to be is not getting inspected. I was only breeding Maltese for a year 1/2 and got my 1st inspection. Everything went great, supper nice man. And he is the one that told me I was the winning number LOL. I like that I have been inspected because I am always happy to tell people I passed with flying colors. But anyway I just want to clear up that it is when the breeder orders puppy papers is how AKC keeps up with how many litters they have and when to put them in that lucky hat. LOL So it is really up to the owner to reg or not. It done help AKC keep up with where the puppy goes. But the inspector told be alot of people do not ever send the puppy papers in, if they are not showing or breeding them. |
