YT Addict | Almost Hurt I was walking Emmett yesterday and we were having a lot of fun. Well, Emmett was doing his little marking business when all of a sudden he just froze. I walked closer to him to see what was wrong when I saw what he was seeing. This guy had just let his pit bull out of the house. At first I didn't panic because he wasn't looking our way, but then he did. He barked at us and started running at us. I yanked Emmett up as fast as I could and reached for my dog mace that I keep on me when I go for walks... I am always worried about loose dogs. I didn't want to have to do it but the dog was almost right on us so I sprayed him. I was very sad but also relieved to see the big crying and running away in pain. His owners must have heard the commotion and they came running out. They started freaking out on me saying that I had hurt their dog, but I was yelling at them for letting their dog run loose. I told them I feared for Emmett's and my life. I told them I just maced the dog, that he should be ok and they said they were sorry. Poor Emmett was shaking the whole time and I about fell over in relief when it was over. So, to say that our fun walk was ruined would be an understatement. Always be on the watch for these things, my baby and I could have gotten mauled if I hadn't had the mace.

♥Tiny Tia my Furbaby♥ Donating Member | Good for you, we were approached by an angry rotty once , he was huge , I was terrified and so was Tia I just picked her up . Can we get mace here in England? I would feel better especially when we travel on our own.

| Awesome! You were so right to have maced the Pit Bull. The dog was chargeing at you, and was a threat to your safety. The owners ended up aplogizing, knowing they were the ones who had their dog let loose. I've been looking at that Dog mace too, and now i really want to purchase some! I take Suzi out for walks and have had dogs follow us. It is unpleasant, and their is one dog that is aggressive towards me! It is a male dog, that likes Suzi, however, is not fond of me when I try and get it away from us. i know who's dog it is , and the woman is older , does not speak English, lost her Husband not long ago>

YT Addict | Thanks for all the support! The only reason I had the mace was because I have seen what a big dog can do to a Yorkie. When I was younger and had my first yorkie Mickey there was something similar that happened in my town. Mickey's brother was bought by someone who lived down the street from me. They were taking him for a walk, just as I had been with my Emmett, when a large chow-chow dog ran up on them and grabbed Mickey's brother. All it took was a shake from the chow chow and the little one was killed. I saw it happen and ever since I started carrying mace. Recently I found out about the mace that was made specifically for dogs so I bought that... and I'm glad I did. I know that dog was going to bite my Emmett, he did not seem friendly or just curious at all. I only wish more people would be aware of their dogs.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm reading a book about caring for small dogs, and they had a really good tip: they have a command "Lift Up", meaning their dogs should jump into their arms. I'm definitely going to train Thor for that so that if he's off leash I can scoop him up quickly.

YT Addict | Oh yes, that would be very good to learn! BTW, Thor is such a beautiful little guy!!! Every time I see him I smile.

| You were right to do what you did. What the heck?? You could have been walking a small child. These owners were irresponsible for letting their pit out without a leash. If that was me they are lucky I wasn't carring something other than mace!!!

| I often worry about loose dogs when I have Scooter and Bitsy outside for a walk. I think I'm going to buy some pepper spray for our walks.

| Wow this really scares me. I take Couver out and always think about what would happen if a big aggressive dog was around the corner at night. Where do you get this mace? I am glad that you were prepared and saved your little one... It wouldn't take much for a dog to do damage

| I'm so glad you and your baby escaped harm. Where did you buy the dog Mace. I'm from Louisville and am just across the river in NA. My DH and I were walking our two a few days ago when I spied a large Pit doing his business just across the road. He had his back to us...Ugh what a sight. lol. Anyway I pointed to my hubby said what are we going to do, but just then the owner stepped out onto the porch with a second Pit and called to the one near us. Luckily he turned and ran home at once. I walk mine alone and its scary. The Mace is a great idea, I didn't know it was made for dogs. |

YT Addict | Well, I ordered mine off of amazon... I got the Halt name brand but I know there are a few others such as the Muzzle brand. I recently saw in Petsmart that they have some called DirectStop. Here is the link for that if you want to look at it. DirectStop Animal Deterrent Spray - Training & Behavior - Dog - PetSmart I just looked on amazon again and they are having a sale on Halt, you can get a can for $6.79.

| OMG!! How scary! So glad you're both okay... at least physically! My neighbor's idiot PB jumped through a second story window and came running right at me, Biggy D (GSD who only likes small dogs) and Peek a Boo. I looked back, to try to get an ETA, thought I shouldn't pick up Peek a Boo bc she would be able to see him, and I didn't want to sacrifice Biggy D, so I decided to hide both dogs behind a bush. I was sooo scared. I told them to sit and stay (I don't know why, bc they never listen to me! but they did this time) I waited till she was 3-4 strides from me and screamed STOP at the top of my lungs. She stopped, turned around and ran back home (Thank God). I couldn't talk for 3 days! Point is, we as Yorkie owners, face death. Big dog owners get a rush of testosterone and face bite wounds (maybe). If they thought for one minute their dogs would die, you bet they'd have them on leashes. If Yorkies were big, they'd really be in trouble. Here's some mace links: Halt Dog Repellent, Wildlife Control, Pest Management - GEMPLER'S Dog Spray by Mace Mace Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray Dog Repellent Pepper Spray repels canine attacks. Made by Mace!
