| Groomer has it, but I don't! We've had to tighten our belts, so I've tried to cut Molly's hair a little instead of taking her to the groomer each time. I used to think it would be easy to do, but I was wrong!! I've done it twice now, and this time she looks better, but I've got a long ways to go. I don't want to totally replace her going to the groomers, especially since I've found a husband and wife team that I love. I just need to stretch my time out between visits. I had a hard time around her ears and on her face, especially between her eyes. Does anyone have helpful hints? Oh, and around the feet...she does not like having her feet touched!! I cannot cut her toenails either! thanks! |

| Ok, I feel stupid. I finally scrolled down on the main page (not sure if I've ever done that) and found the Grooming board. I'll do some reading out there! |

| I have groomed my Uni myself from day one. She has never been to a groomer. I'm proud to say i think she looks great! For example, always try to hold and massage her paws and pads. She will get used to you touching her there. If she pulls away, let her. Don't ever yank on her hands. When she is sleeping on your lap, massage her paws. Eventually she will get used to it. I have Uni sleep on my lap on her back, paws up, and i will clip her nails while she is asleep! Hee hee, after each clip she wakes up and goes "huh? what just happened...?" and falls back asleep! Same with cutting around the face, it's easier to see when she is on your lap upside down. Also a good tool for the tips of the ears, get those eyebrow shaver things from the beauty supply store, and just use it to shave off the fur at the tips. i will try to upload some just groomed photos of Uni to see what i do with her fur. I'm really proud of myself! : ) Oh, DO NOT TRY PETI-CURE OR PEDI PAWS. they do not work! I bought one and the sound freaked out Uni. Would you like your nails to be filed down with a rotary Dremmel tool? I wouldn't! The dogs in the commercial love it BECAUSE ITS NOT ON!!! I got duped, thankfully I got my money back, but it took over 6 months! Good thing they refunded because most credit card companies after 6 months you are no longer protected. As with any kind of training, it takes time. Just be patient. Sometimes it will take days to get all her mails cut. it's better to take your time than get frustrated and spook out your furbaby.

| Thank you for those suggestions! I will try them...especially the clipping nails while she is asleep. I did brush her teeth last night, then we came into the living room and played. I think I will try to make that a nightly routine, so she'll know that after the bad comes the good! And thanks for the heads up on the pedicure thing. I was about to buy one this weekend! |

| To cut nails, do you use regular nail clippers that I use to cut my nails?

The pet store carries clippers. Some looked something like rounded-end scissors and some looked like a hole punch. They both worth but I prefer the scissor type right now. Or you can use something like Pedi Paws.

| I clip all my girls since i would have to win the lottery to take all 5 to the groomers all the time. It does get easier. I use the pedipaws on my girls toenails and LOVE it!! I know it freaked them out when i first turned it on but i decided that i would get them used to it very gradually. They don't even care now and i do a little filing about every other day. It took me a week of just touching their foot with it (not turned on) and i would praise them like crazy. i just went around on each foot and touched it with the thing. then i started holding their foot and putting each toenail inside the machine...still NOT turned on. Just got them used to me touching and putting their toenails inside. That took about another week of doing that every day. Next i turned it on and just started touching their foot with it again and gradually did the toenails. By then, they didn't care and now it doesn't bother them one little bit. I love how it smooths the toenails off really nicely and i don't have all the clicking around on the floor. It may not be for everyone but I love it and use it without any problems. It has definitely paid for itself since i had to pay to get their toenails done even though i do the grooming. Patience is the key. Good luck!! Now, if i could just get them to let me brush their teeth....maybe i need to get an electric toothbrush for them too! LOL!! |

I've always let the vet or groomer cut Jackson's nails but I want to learn to do it myself!

YT 1000 Club Member | I took Roxie to the groomer about a week ago. I like my groomer and she does a good job on Roxie's hair. It's the nails that I'm not happy with. She clips them but they are still too rough. They really need to be filed a little to smooth them. It's bad when I have shorts on and she paws at my legs to pick her up. Kinda really hurts. I wonder if one my rougher nail files would help smooth them out? I also agree that it gets pretty costly taking them to the groomer alot. I only take Roxie once every 2-3 months and we do ok.

| I do all mine, it take time, but you will get it, I do the nails after their bath, I cut it little by little untill I see the black dot never have a problem with them bleeding, I put them on their back on top of my legs when I'm siting, they now relax; oh I forgot I go to Sally beauty and get their black strong files nails and I file the rough edges after I cut it little by little so smooth it out

| So, I began on Jackson yesterday and I've been doing it very slowly so he doesn't get too restless or bored with me cutting him up... lol. It doesn't look half bad - I just wanted to learn how to do it myself so you gotta start somewhere! I went to Target and bought some clippers and some hair-cutting scissors so we'll see!

| I've been doing mine for the past couple of months. It's not quite the groomers work but it's not half bad either. Maggie has never been to the groomers and she's been wonderful other than her nails. I will sometimes do it over a couple of days as they get stressed and I don't want them to get to the point that they start to fight me. They both are pretty good about it though. I can pretty much cut the hair around their paws but they really don't like their nails done.
