| I need help/advice on grooming my pup So i was just looking at the pics from the thread of yorkies getting their teeth clean and I was amazed. this made me realise how much I struggle with my Bailey. I cannot even brush her without her trying to bite me or anything. She abselutaly hates it. It gets harder to, around her legs gets tangle very easy and last time i just decided to cut her fur off around her legs so it would be easier... I havent even try brushing her teeth yet since i am waiting for her to get use to the other things we do to make her look nice and be healthy. Does anyone have any advice for me. Any tricks out there that would make Bailey let me brush her coat? I do brush her everyday night and sometimes even in the morning but the brushing session gets cut short since she freaks out. She is also only 4 months old if that makes a difference?? thanks everyone!!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Do NOT allow her to win. Groom her by placing her on a table, work quickly and quietly....if she trys to bite you...pick her up by the scruff of her neck and sternly say no. It sounds worse than it is and their mothers picked them up this way. Once she learns she will be brushed...she won't fight you.

| As soon as Sophie had all her shots I began with a groomer. The first couple times they would just do what they called a "puppy groom" which is wash/dry and brush. They'd clip nails and a very slight trim. But it was more to get the puppy used to being handled than anything. Eventually we moved to the full 1.5-2 hour sessions with teeth brushing. Sometimes in the quiet moments I would just touch Sophie everywhere. Rub her paws, her face, her ears, her belly, and just slowly got her used to being touched. There are certainly aspects of the grooming that she doesn't care for. She's fine with teeth brushing, if I could just get that tongue out of the way. I swear it grows about 10" as soon as the toothbrush/paste come out of the drawer! I have recently bought a small grooming table for about $34 at PetEdge. It was a great investment. Somehow moving her from "in the sink" into the leash/arm of the grooming table seems to tell her that we are here for business not play. However, if all else fails, try Cheerios. There was a point in time that my DD would feed cheerios while I groomed. It got the job done! LOL |

| Molly didn't like to be brushed when I started out with one of the slicker brushes, I guess because it pulled. I then bought one of the soft bristled brushes and she LOVED it. She will come running for it. Once I got her to loving that, I use it for a while then finish up with the slicker brush. For some grooming I will put a towel down on my washer and groom her up there. She's nervous enough about falling that she will stay on the towel, away from the edge. I don't ever leave her there though. I'm sure she would try to jump. That's my only helpful hints...I've got to work on the toothbrushing thing myself! |

YT Addict | When I first started brushing Pebbles she would bite me and the brush and it was quite aggressive and she still sometimes does this. But I do believe I am winning the battle. When I brush her I make sure that it is a time when she is tired out and I also give her a favorite bone to chew on or something she really likes. This was the only way I could get to shave her ears. She would stay focused on her bone or treat and I would shave. I have her cooperating about 90% of the time now. Good Luck I hope I helped a bit!

| Four months is a perfect time to start her on getting used to grooming. I got started on Uni while she slept. I still do most of her grooming while she sleeps on my lap. She's never been to the groomer, I do it myself. I didn't have luck with slicker brushed or pin brushes. I use a flat metal toothed comb instead that i got at target. it works way better, use the tip of the comb to get out mats, then use the entire length to smooth. While you comb, softly talk and praise her. Start out with short 5 min sessions, and reward, and work your way up to the hour long sessions. Eventually she will understand grooming is a part of yorkie life!
